Still No RRX? What's taking so long?

It's been over a year since Red announced the RRX and there still aren't any available... Every time I call Red they claim that they have no idea and cannot give a timeframe estimate.

What's taking so long?

A few months ago, I ordered a Red Station card reader... it took a month to arrive! How can such a simple and basic product like a card reader take a month to obtain?

I'm beginning to seriously rethink investing in the Red ecosystem and products. There's something wrong here.

Justin, we have another batch coming in about a week. Then another a week after that.

Worth the wait, IMHO. A great portable solution, for transcoding, in a Tb2 chassis. Would like to see the display out fully functioning, as well as the card's playback and transcode potential. Those are coming along, I am told.

I am allocated and ordering tonight...and will also have it available for rent at a major house on the east coast... I know its frustrating but the reality is they are shipping it as fast as they can, but allocating it for Dragon owners takes priority...

Someone contacted me today about buying his second hand, if your interested he is trying to ship it directly from Red to the new buyer...but since I am getting mine for the wonderful discounted pricing of buying a Dragon deal, I am not in need at MSRP. I would be happy to forward you his contact information though if your interested in it Justin? And I hope Red doesn't get bummed on the sale, since obviously the guy is making a cut between his discounted pricing and the MSRP he is offloading it at... The reality is some people just need them now, and don't have Dragons so I am sure you can appreciate that Brent and others...

Anyway best of luck, Nick also has one he rents out too fyi...

Edit

PM sent just in case it helps you out...best of luck and cheers!

Yeah, but that doesn't really mean anything if the batches are so minuscule that you cannot satisfy even a minimal demand.

Direct Question: if I place an order today, when am I likely to get a RRX?

Red has been saying "soon, soon" for a year now.

Actually, no! Definitely not worth the wait by an reasonable and sane standard at all. It's been over a year. We must now rent RRXs at exorbitant rates... it's insane what they're charging too, but whatever, it's a free market. The reality is that many of us are actively losing money by having to outsource gear because Red cannot satisfy even the most basic demand.

Ok, this is nothing new here, Red is notorious for premature announcement... Scarlet, Dragon, RRX, etc... we have every right to be upset.

A month to get a card reader... are you serious?

I was glad Red didn't make any significant announcements at NAB this year... I mean, they still haven't delivered on last year. Hopefully this trend continues.

!

I'm happy for you, really.

My complaint is that this is a recurring theme with Red. Rushing product to market when it's neither ready nor in enough supply to matter. I personally know 20 people with Epics, all of whom are still waiting on their Dragons.... how late was that... two years? I do know one person who actually got it though.

To be honest, I kind of see it as vaporware in a sense. It's like Red doesn't want you to buy from their competitors so customers are mislead into thinking that they'll be able to get a product sooner than they have any intention of releasing, let alone have completed. It's unethical. I have yet to witness such egregious behavior with any other company... BMD production camera being a notable exception, but their other products are usually on time.

Sorry, not trying to come down on anyone specifically, but enough is enough. Red needs to stop pissing on the ones who value their products and contribution and want them to succeed... you won't hear me complaining about the price, just get the damn thing out already.

My Rocket-X allocation came one week and 3 days after my camera arrived, actually quite a bit sooner than I expected, so it seems as if RED is starting to ramp up Rocket-X delivery to camera owners. This is probably not helpful to hear for DITs who are not camera owners, and indeed, it is probably quite frustrating, because the Rocket box rentals are expensive and cut into your rates, if you can't own one. Most DITs I know can pay these off very quickly, if they can get their hands on them without having to pay a premium....

Hi Justin,

Well, challenges to my sanity have been usually reserved to the ex-wife...

Feature this, however-You have to take a whole lotta footy that needs transcoding overnight and you have a Mbr...what will U do? Well, with RRX in Tb2, you gotta shot vs. no job. Not sayin' that is what should be done, but it just maybe could be done. I started the wait clock, from a more recent interval than 1 year, for the RRX, however. Still, we may see more than less of a need for it for a good while to come.

Some other notable wait times are for Flex 4k, Amria, Leica Summilux, lots of high end stuff ends up with these problems, not that its an excuse, but these things do seem to happen on the high end fairly often, low yields, marketing in front of development, who knows the real causations but I see it daily with lots of brands. I hope that PM I sent you helps you out man and I can appreciate the difficult situation your in. Its tough on all of us waiting in line getting stuck paying rentals, but things seem to be moving faster now with both Dragons and Rocket Xs. Between a friend and I we have one dragon on hand and another ready to be allocated, so its moving along but honestly we are going to wait on it until the bugs fixed. Sometimes being early to the party brings its own set of hassles, OLPF changes, sensor tweaks. MX is a very stable system and it may be a blessing you get Dragon once its been perfected, so there is all kinds of ways to look at it... Hope it gets better for you soon! Cheers
