There is a lot of money in the World for Independent Films, here is just one example; http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/can...-ogden-barnum-launch-e2b-capital/#more-502588 ” Cannes: Cassian Elwes, Robert Ogden Barnum Launch e2b Capital” By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor - Friday, 17 May 2013 07:00 UK

Most of the principals from the Capital Firms like to frequent the International Film Festivals. There is a new one every so often.

TO QUOTE; “Last year was unbelievably productive and looking back I could not have done it without Rob. He is a perfect partner for me because, apart from making on our own films, we love working on other people’s films, as well as finding solutions in impossible situations. I feel privileged to work with him, he’s a driven entrepreneur with a proven track record over the past few years,” said Elwes.

“It’s become a more unified, global marketplace for filmmakers and financiers. We believe we can help connect great material with the right sales companies and investors to meet everyone’s needs.” said Barnum.

For the moment “Cannes is Hot” that's the place to keep your eye on, then it will be to next “Film Festival - Market”, and before we know it, the year will be over, only to begin again next year, and the year after that! And forever!

Here are the “pdf.” From the “Cannes Film Festival”, you’ll probably notice that a combination of Film Presentations and Film Sales occurs at the “Film Festival - Market”, but in reality it’s more about the Sales than the Presentation. They are “The Hollywood Reporters” Daily Magazine Size General output!

The “Cannes Film Festival – Market” is a truly International event, it attracts people from the “Four Corners” of the “Planet Earth”, that are “Aspiring or Experience” Writers, Directors, Producers, Distributors; they put their monies on the table for a booth at the “Palais” or just a presence and almost mandatory advertisement in such publications as “The Hollywood Reporter” and other’s in different languages, exhibit their level of productions to the World Press, and sit down to make serious business plans.

The attention for the press is very COVETED THING because almost all the big “Hollywood Studios” do everything imaginable to draw attention to them-selves. So where does that leave the little guy (actually not so little) with a limited budget for attracting attention (not so little budget, but small by comparison). The “Hollywood Studios” bring out their Big Stars, Directors, Producers and they have an army of people scheduling all sorts of appearances, distributing photos, a behind the scenes campaign.

One of the nuances here is that everybody needs product, THEY ACTUALLY NEED YOU, at all levels; “Internationals Distribution” for a growing ‘Trend’ that’s becoming larger and larger, that’s where the movie goers are-at, around the World Markets. Remember in #100 OF THIS THREAD I said you need a Script Cards, Script, Production Break Down, Storyboard, in others words you need to be fully prepared to make a presentation to anybody you find in the accompanying pages below, or anywhere else! Because they need PRODUCT, they need to fill all those theaters that they are continuing to build across the “Planet Earth”. So the Persuasion or Grandeur of your film image matters, how “Big or Small” your film is perceive count a-lot, and there is a myriads of ways of doing that! Let your imagination go!

Read; “New Twist: Stars Shillers” on the pdf day 1 below. They are competing for attentions from buyers across the Planet, from the International Press, it’s a Madhouse! At the “Palais”, the “Marche du Film”, and private meetings of all kinds of stripes.

Another Day at The Cannes Film Festival – Market” (Day 5) is now posted with its 64 Page report; http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/si...tival_Dailies/Cannes 2013/Cannes2013_day5.pdf Three more issues to go before it comes to an end, you can follow them on (Days 6, 7, and 8); http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/cannes/2013/dailies

THE ARTICLE ON PAGE ONE OF DAY FIVE; “Buyers Get a Case of Senioritis” TO QUOTE; “They don’t call them the golden generation for nothing. At the market in Cannes and at theaters around the world, filmmakers and distributors are targeting what has become the new sweet spot for box-once performance: moviegoers aged 60 and up. In one of the biggest market deals this year, The Weinstein Co. plopped down $6.5 million for rights in the U.S., Canada and Spain to Pathe International’s PHILOMENA. Directed by Stephen Frears, the film stars Judi Dench, 78, in the true-life story of an Irishwoman’s search for the son she gave up for adoption. It’s clear TWC is hoping the senior-friendly star and subject matter will appeal to the same aging audiences that made films such as BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL ($137 million) and HOPE SPRINGS ($114 million) global hits.” “Buyers Get a Case of Senioritis” Day Five.

As everyone heads indoors at Cannes, meetings the kinds that make or break a deal head into uncertainty! “Cannes Washout: Rain-Drenched Glamour on the Cote d'Azur” http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cannes-washout-rain-drenched-glamour-525005 11:11 AM PDT 5/18/2013 by Patrick Brzeski, Rhonda Richford.

THERE IS ALWAYS AT LEAST ONE OF MANY; Monday, May 20, 2013 – Day 6 – Page 34 - 11:00 AM – “INDUSTRY IN FOCUS: FINANCING A FILM IN 2013”; Nick LoPiccolo, Paradigm; Peter Trinh, ICM Partners; Deborah McIntosh, WME; Paul Miller, Film Financing, Doha Film Institute; Bill Lischak, Co-President of OddLot Entertainment; Moderated by Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Why? Because there is always a MARKET for how to raise “MONEY FOR A FILM”, by any name you want to call-it! All of these “Festival – Markets” have very similar structures, they change from City, to City as time move on till the end of the year, and then it begins all over AGAIN! I’m not knocking-it, I’m just saying this is another way to raise money for a film, but remember what I said in #100 OF THIS THREAD! Cards with scene selections, Script, Script Breakdown, Storyboard, and then go-for–it!

Crowdfunding! A new word in the lexicon of Movie Financing, it’s already in trouble by the Corporate Take Over! But the fight is not over.

FROM THE ARTICLE ON PAGE ONE OF DAY 7; “Is Crowdfunding Going Corporate?” “As stars including Zach Braff and Kristen Bell make online film funding mainstream, fans fear the popular financing strategy will sell out” By Scott Roxborough

TO QUOTE; “Crowdfunding is ready for its CLOSE-UP. Going straight to fans online to raise money to bankroll productions has long since moved from geekdom to the mainstream with projects first launched on crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and IndieGoGo selling screenings at the Cannes Film Festival and drawing buyers at the market. Some of the biggest news at the festival this year has involved online-funded films, from The Weinstein Co.’s Radius label taking North American rights to Jeremy Saulnier’s BLUE RUIN to the Finnish filmmakers behind cult crowdfunding title IRON SKY announcing a sequel to their Nazis from the moon film. Then of course there’s Zach Braff, who secured an international distribution deal with Worldview Entertainment for WISH I WAS HERE, a follow up to his 2004 hit GARDEN STATE, which started on Kickstarter and has since raised close to $3 million in online donations.” The Hollywood Reporter Day Seven!

That battle is not over yet, “Crowdfunding” is still a work-in-progress, keep your eyes and ears open for the next-chapter, remember my saying; “Anything you say in the “Movie Business” is “True”, no matter how outrageous it may be”!

Well, today is the last day of the “Cannes Film Festival – Market” at least as far as The Hollywood Reporter is concern. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/si...tival_Dailies/Cannes 2013/cannes2013_day8.pdf

I think it was appropriate to see a photo of the people involved in the Liberace Film; Steven Soderbergh with part of his cast Michael Douglas, and Matt Damon, and of course Producer Jerry Weintraub! There is a good report on Page Four about Sodenbergh working on “Behind the Candelabra” (also page 24).

The final topic of the day was; “A TOPSY-TURVY CANNES MARKET” “Robust one day, dead the next, business was as unpredictable as the weather. At least there was star power in the form of Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton and Keanu Reeves” By Pamela McClintock & Stuart Kemp.

TO QUOTE; “In terms of dealmaking, the Cannes market was as varied as the wild weather, with some sellers reporting a general slowdown and others touting numerous sales.

If moods were generally glum, it was because there wasn’t the same parade of big-budget projects flooding the Cannes pre-sales market as in the past two years (CLOUD ATLAS, LONE SURVIVOR, PARANOIA and THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS among them). Part of the issue is that international sales agents are all going after the same stars, making it harder to close deals in time for Cannes.

“It’s very challenging for buyers today when they come to Cannes and aren’t excited by the product,” says one veteran agent. “Throw in the weather, and it sucks the electricity out of the marketplace. We didn’t do a good enough job in exciting them.” The Hollywood Reporter.

After-all it’s about the selling, so on to the next “Film Festival – Market” as do the Produces, Directors, and Writers move on till the next time.

Cannes another Jewel Heist; http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/can...ce-missing-after-hotel-du-cap-soiree-reports/ By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor - Friday, 24 May 2013 08:17 UK

"In what would be THE SECOND HIGH-PROFILE jewerly heist of the Cannes Film Festival, a diamond necklace valued at $2.6M is said to be missing after a star-studded party at the HOTEL DU CAP earlier this week. Fawaz Gruosi, founder of SWISS JEWELER DE GRISOGONO, told Reuters that the necklace disappeared after being worn as part of an annual event, which this year celebrated the company’s 20th anniversary and was attended by Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton among others. Local police, hotel security and 80 bodyguards had been ON-DUTY Gruosi told Reuters, but an inventory at the end of the night found the necklace missing. A Cannes police source said they were investigating whether it was a theft, an inventory issue, or a loss, according to Reuters. Last week’s theft of $1.4M in Chopard jewels is still under investigation. Swiss newspaper LE MATIN says police are actively pursuing at least three suspects." deadline.com

It would certainly make for the start of a good movie plot, it-being Cannes and all.

As Cannes comes to an end this article recently appeared on dealine.com; “Hammond On Cannes: A New Day Comes To The Fest As HBO and VOD Movies Compete For Palme d’Or” “By PETE HAMMOND - Wednesday May 22, 2013 @ 5:32am PDT http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/ham...hbo-and-vod-movies-compete-for-the-palme-dor/

TO QUOTE; “An HBO film? A VOD movie? Competing for the Palme d’Or, all seriously in one of the last bastions of pure cinema, the Cannes Film Festival‘s main competition? Oui!” deadline.com

“HBO made a big splash Tuesday night with its extremely well-received STEVEN SODERBERGH-DIRECTED movie BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, the story of a very closeted Liberace and his relationship with a young man that has become one of the best-reviewed films here. Its Oscar-winning stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon hit the Palais Grand Theatre’s red carpet, won raves and immediate awards talk here, even though one person said of the film’s Palme d’Or chances, “I CAN’T IMAGINE CANNES GIVING AN AWARD TO AN HBO MOVIE”. Really? Well, who could have imagined Cannes, a few years ago, actually embracing HBO and letting it compete at the big table which is exactly what CANDELABRA is doing. Many observers here think Douglas is in fact the frontrunner for the Best Actor prize for his uncanny portrayal of the uber-flamboyant Liberace. I would go as far to say that Douglas and Damon, who plays his young lover Scott Thorson (the man who wrote the expose upon which the film is based), would easily have been nominated for Oscars had this gone theatrical instead of cable in America (it will be in theaters internationally).”

“Instead the film, which HBO begins airing Sunday in the U.S., and its stars will just have to settle for sweeping the Emmys, as it most likely will do. That it also represents what STEVEN SODERBERGH SAYS is his final film for the foreseeable future could actually increase his Palme d’Or chances in my view, perhaps as a message that he shouldn’t quit so soon. How ironic that no major studio or distributor wanted the film when it was initially pitched. But HBO jumped at the chance. Douglas for one is extremely grateful. He even had to hold back tears and got very choked up trying to thank his colleagues during the Cannes press conference yesterday for waiting for him while he underwent his cancer treatments.” deadline.com

I guess HBO is moving “up-in-the-world”!

Well “CROWDFUNDING” works; “ZACH BRAFF ENDS $3+M KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN” http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/zac-braff-ends-wish-i-was-here-kickstarter-with-over-3m-in-pledges/ By DOMINIC PATTEN - Friday May 24, 2013 @ 3:21pm PDT

TO QUOTE; “After 30 days and several big name castings, Zach Braff’s WISH I WAS HERE Kickstarter campaign ended today up $1 million over its initial ask. The final result was just over $3.1 million. When it launched on April 24, Braff initially sought $2 million for the indie film which surpassed its $2M fundraising goal in just three days. ”Thank you, thank you, thank you. I won’t let you down! Lets do this,” posted Braff on Twitter, along with the pic to the right, after the campaign closed on Friday. The CROWDFUNDING effort ended up with 46,520 backers including 3 who pledged $9,000 or more and 1 who pledged $10,000 or more. Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin and Josh Gad will join Braff in the film about a thirtysomething actor who is trying to figure out who he is. The former SCRUBS star co-wrote the screenplay for WISH I WAS HERE with his brother and will direct the film. Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg are producing the pic through their Double Feature Films. Worldview Entertainment has stepped in to provide gap financing for the film.” Dealine.com

Here is just one example of how it’s working, there are many others!

I was thinking and speculating; who is “Harvey Weinstein”, is he one of the many saviors’ of the Independent Filmmakers? Or is he a “Bottom Fisherman” always on the lookout for the next good deal for territories’ he feels COMFORTABLE-WITH, and always with a Production Partner looking to get his next Feature? He has left the “Cannes Film Festival – Market” with many films, or productions to be made.

Two Stories appeared in deadline.com; “HARVEY WEINSTEIN CLOSES PROLIFIC CANNES WITH DEALS FOR ‘CAROL’ AND ‘THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS SPIVET’ By MIKE FLEMING JR - Saturday May 25, 2013 @ 10:33am PDT http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/harvey-weinstein-completes-cannes-with-deals-for-spivet-and-carol/ and “CANNES TOLDJA! THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY ACQUIRES U.S. RIGHTS TO TODD HAYNES-HELMED ‘CAROL’” By MIKE FLEMING JR - Tuesday May 28, 2013 @ 3:39am PDT http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/can...uires-u-s-rights-to-todd-haynes-helmed-carol/

I personally think “The Weinstein Company (TWC)”-is an IMPORTANT PLAYER in the “Independent Film” business, REGARDLESS OF HIS METHODS, he gets film partially financed, completed, or with just a few minutes sample on a reel he gives the go-ahead, and that’s a welcome sight on the Impendent Side when there is no other outlet for an idea, a Film began but stopped because of CASH-FLOW, or a Film that no one else wants to touched but he see something IN-IT. Sometimes it may not be the BEST PRICE one can get, but where are you going to GET-IT?

After all it’s a BIG-BOYS BUSINESS! Remember; “Anything you say in the “Movie Business” is “True”, no matter how outrageous it may be”!

Humberto Rivera

I was thinking about something “François Truffaut” said as a CHARACTER in the 1973 film “Day for Night” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_for_Night_(film) La Nuit Américaine.

TO QUOTE (more or less) from the Film; “Making a Film is like stagecoach journey into the Far West, at the beginning you start with the hope for a beautiful trip, and shortly you wonder if you can make-it at-all!” François Truffaut!

But somehow you do make-it to the-end, it just happens, it's a bit of hard work mixed with a little bit of magic, it’s hard to explain, but it does happen! The Truffaut Film was a Movie about the Production of Cinema and all of its problems that one can possibly encounter in France! It’s included within the list of the best; 100 FILMS EVER MADE along with Truffaut’s; “The 400 Blows”!

I cannot OVEREMPHASIZE; “Anything you say in the “Movie Business” is “True”, no matter how outrageous it may be”!

Humberto Rivera

What is Movie Magic, THAT’S A TOUGH QUESTION, François Truffaut said during mid-point of his film; “Day for Night”. TO QUOTE (more or less) during the Production of the Film; “So we reached the mid-point of our Adventure! Before we began I was hoping to make a ‘Beautiful Film’. Then as we proceed I’m lowering my sights to just get the film completed. Around the mid-way point, I examined my conscious and I said; ‘I could have done better, you could have given more!’ Now we take the second half to make up for the mistakes of the first half from here-on, I tried to make everything that will be on the screen come to LIFE! I wanted to make “Meet Pamela” (the name of the film with in the Film “Day for Night”). The actors are comfortable in their roles, the crew is together, and personal problems will have to wait! “CINEMA IS KING”! François Truffaut!

“Movie Magic” as it applies to “François Truffaut” 1973 film “Day for Night” within the Film; there is the continuous complex conversation about the how is the Film’s Financial situation, how many days/weeks can he shoots for, what happens when the DAY opening scene is lost at the Laboratory, and must be reshot at NIGHT, and it goes on, and on, and on! The Director, Producer, Filmmaker must keep it together for the duration of the production, no matter how insurmountable the conditions get! It’s important because MONEY is what makes the Movie Business Run!

There is an old “Colloquialism” that’s become a “Cliché”, but is so true nonetheless; “It’s like Making Sausages”! That’s what the multi-discipline of Filmmaking is all about; “Above and Below the Line”; Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production! The Movie Magic is what on THE SCREEN, not behind it!

Humberto Rivera

I was thinking KICKSTARTER is really a “Good Idea” for rising Low Budget Capital (one of many); http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/kickstarter basics#Acco here is the place for their Frequently Asked Questions FAQ! It’s what JONATHAN PEARS is using to raise money for his little non-theatrical film, to be shot on Red; http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?100749-HOW-I-LEARNED-THE-HARD-WAY-THAT-RED-WAS-RIGHT

Money is at the root of the Film Business, at the other end we have the desire to tell a story, usually one that begins with a SCRIPT that takes many shapes depending such things as; IMPROVISATION by Actors, a Directors BETTER VISION of what he wants to tell, editing of ONLY what you shot (not what you imagined you shot). Then there are the distributors answering to the needs of different territories and censors. The always ever pressing demands from the money side looking over the shoulder of the Producers and Directors, and depending on what level of experience in the Filmmaking Process are the Money people.

No matter how “Big or Small” the BUDGET is (and it goes beyond the production cost), there are always BE suggestions from the side coming at you, how well you handle them will determined how well you’re going to do, sometimes not so well others closer to what you had in mind. Remember; “Anything you say in the “Movie Business” is “True”, no matter how outrageous it may be”!

Baz Luhrmann, who directed “The Great Gatsby,” read about it on the NY Times; http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/03/b...at-gatsby-proves-a-box-office-winner.html?hpw

TO QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE; ““The Great Gatsby,” directed by Baz Luhrmann, has become the latest example of the Hollywood machinery getting audience interest WRONG. “Gatsby,” adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel and starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, is now expected to take in at least $330 million worldwide.” NYT

One of the things we see developing within our eyes is the deterioration of Plans vs. the Real World! I just want to FIRST SAY; I wish Ketch all the luck in the World, your determination will pay off. But when you “butt-up” against Reality, it becomes tough, but it’s very possible; you just need to continue working on a real WORLD SOLUTION to get YOUR FIRST FILM done!

At that Place were the “Rubber meets the Road” is really tough. I say all-this without knowing anything about Ketch’s Script, or looking at his Budget, or Production Breakdown, or Post-Productions Plans, or what kind of Distribution Plans he has in mind.

To quote the last Paragraph of Ketch’s Epic-M Owners #1506 post http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?58043-KETCH-ROSSi/page151; “As for MY FIRST MOVIE, having just moved to Modena, I am making some last changes to the Screenplay, to adjust budgetary residuals to shoot, and looking in to getting some more commercial supporters, manufacturers etc. in, and then with the creation of a KICKSTARTER PROGRAM hope to make it as great as it can be... ;)” Ketch Rossi

At the end of the day is constant Juxtaposition of Shooting Schedules VS Cost Till Completion, it’s an inedible fact! Money is at the root of the Film Business! Now different kinds of funding mechanism are becoming available, here another; http://www.deadline.com/2013/06/don...aims-to-celebritize-crowdfunding/#more-513379 “Donald Trump’s FundAnything Hires Producer Brad Wyman, Aims To “Celebritize” Crowdfunding” By JEN YAMATO - Tuesday June 4, 2013 @ 5:22pm PDT, dealine.com

TO QUOTE; “FundAnything, backed by Donald Trump and founded by Bill Zanker, has been on the crowdsourcing scene for a month now but aims to set itself apart from IndieGoGo and Kickstarter with the power of celebrity. The neophyte crowdfunding site has tapped veteran producer Brad Wyman (Monster, Barb Wire) as its CCO – that’s Chief CROWDFUNDING Officer – and head of Film/Video/Web in charge of developing fundraising projects and building a worldwide sales team. Wyman most recently did a stint at rival crowdfunder IndieGoGo and will look to help nurture fundraising projects and invest FundAnything’s own seed money to help select projects meet their full or partial funding goals. FundAnything is open to projects that span film, television, webseries, and other types of projects including music, gaming, and nonprofit, but unlike other crowdsourcing competitors is actively looking for celebrity-fronted campaigns. “We’re looking to celebritize crowdfunding,” Zanker tells me of FundAnything’s emphasis on campaigns by celebrities, a la Zach Braff‘s recent $3M Kickstarter success. “Anybody that has a fan base is a celebrity – Youtube celebrities, business celebrities.” At the FundAnything launch Trump gave $180K in cash to attendees as a pricey publicity stunt. While crowdfunding is still familiar to only a small percentage of Americans, FundAnything’s banking on Trump’s celebrity and 2.2M Twitter fans to spread FundAnything awareness farther than its rival services.” deadline.com

Good Luck Ketch!
