  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh...

Speaking of features, can we get a button in Build 19 that automatically makes our movies as good as Soderbergh's?

That button is already there: start/stop. He dindn't has anything else. Same as Peter Jackson. :sarcasm:

great words. Do things the best with what you have rather than what we need?

Jim, I have had two funding sources fell through over the last two months and I am now scrambling together with my friends to put together a basic package to get at least the body and some absolute basics. I have shot a NatGeo documentary on a XL1 for which I have got the membership. That was my third. I have been renting Red One for various projects and jobs for some time now and i can't wait what I can do with it once I have my own... Any posts I do here and on Scarletuser are purely a "customer feedback", never a whining... I can't compare myself to the likes of PJ (whom I've met on LOTR project) or SS, but I am the type of guy who make things work with what ever I have. Right here, right now...

Back to work...

:) Peter

Red has found the one to do the next Epic/Scarlet test movie. SS

I'd be honored to do it, but I'm sure there are those who would be far better choices...oh wait, you weren't talking to me. It's the other SS. Yes, Soderbergh would be a better choice. :)

6. 1st day shooting in a walk down only valley, 100+ degree temperature. Cameras overheat. SS says "put ice packs on them until RED can figure this out" and continues shooting. Continues this process for a few days until we can email a firmware upgrade. Pre-production firmware, no exposure assist or frame guides of any kind, 24fps only... barely more advanced than "Boris" and "Natasha" used by Peter Jackson. Never complains. Not once. Only... "happy to be here".

He never once complained about "what RED couldn't do". He always made work what he could do with any given version of RED. If I tell him that we just enabled something, he'll respond with something like "well that will be nice. I could use that." Steven has never once asked us for any special treatment... only pushing us along by believing in us. Amazing what a powerful technique that is.

Sometimes on this board we get so carried away with every spec, feature or wish that we paralyze ourselves with actually doing something. I have learned a lot from Steven. Not just about cameras and shooting, but about living. "We have what we have and that is plenty enough (for today) to do something meaningful. If you give me more, I'll do more. But I have enough now." I just love his philosophy.

Jim

Humbleness is a virtue.

Also, recognizing that revolution doesn't happen overnight is also important. Shooting a film about one of the most revolutionary people of the 20th century on a camera being touted as revolutionary to 21st century filmmaking is quite a storyline. Steven recognized there would be bumps in the road, but that the end goal would be more important than some minor inconveniences along the way. The ice pack story is great. Says a lot about his approach. I like it.

wow.

i believe in you i just cant do any thing right now
i would love a red 1 but all i can do is just wait and think of what i am giong to shoot. i sit here listening to the clock tick and tock...
and tick...
and tock... until $3k scarlet.

About Che and the critics I my self have had the chance to confront the cuban public and they dont forgive, it is a very film cult society, Good for Steven and great for RED that was a hard test!!

Great post, Jim. I see now how Soderbergh got his career off the ground, he never waited for anything to happen for him, he simply did it. Very inspiring. I think you're cut from the same cloth, so to speak.

Thanks for the inspirational words Jim.
Wishing you and yours a very wonderful (and Merry) Christmas! Thanks for all the Christmas gifts you've given us over the last few months! ( to say the least! )

I always knew that RED will be it, and this believing seems to avoid me from big problems with RED. RED is a workhorse, my two cameras are "rolling" almost every week without major issues. So I can wait with a lot of passion, what JIMRED will give us the next month and years, because I'm already very happy with my cameras and the results. Never expect in this near future to get 35mm for quiet nothing. This camera makes me free of hunting behind the big money because I don't need it to afford RED. What else do I need than a camera which is always close to shoot whatever my heart asks for.

...or you could go out buy a used camera now and actually shoot stuff :) (which I think is partly the moral of the story)

For sure, I'm not gonna sit back on my arse waiting for my scarlet -- I shot 8 MiniDV tapes last month in Mexico caves, have trips planned this weekend, and then Canada next year.

Would I love to shoot it in 3K or 5K ? and actually have a wide-angle lens and RAW and all that junk --- sure, but ...

And even with my mediocre talents, I can look back with something I shot last year and cringe at my technique, and story telling, or sometimes get a surprise like when I reviewed some footage we shot with a non-HD camera and actually quite like it ...

Good point. A great cameraman can make use of a great camera. A great camera cant make use of a great cameraman.

Work with what is available and learn how to use a camera and what makes a good shot such a good shot.

If you're looking for at a RED as a film maker, don't hope to make an awesome movie because you have a RED. Many people have made great indie films using nothing but standard def cameras or consumer based hdv camcorders. Its the story that makes the movie. The image that goes along with it is just a plus factor.

oh, P.S., I don't intend to lecture you, but I wanted to grow on your initial post.

Thanks for that post Jim. Very nice read and put me in the "right" mood.
