Somebody have any contact or information on what going on with Steve Gibby?
Last information I have he was filming peregrine falcons down south in the coast of Chile.

Do you have any phone number? There´re some services working here.

Greetings from Chile,

Daniel

I hope Steve is ok. I've learned a lot from him reading this forum.

Daniel, actually I am from Chile. I live in Massachusetts.
I have all my family and friends in Chile. So, solo tengo curiosidad en saber como esta Steve, no somos amigos solo hemos estado en contacto un par de veces aqui en Reduser.net.

Saludos y cuidense alla en Chile.

Steve is one of my favorite posters here at Reduser, plus he is a fellow wildlife filmmaker. I will feel awful if something happen to him there in my country.

Christian as soon as I read this you got me worried seek!!

Steve not only is one of most respected Member of this community, but is also a very dear friend and so his sweet wife Pam, and as I know they always travel together I worried the worst for both!

Fortunately Steve just got back to me from Chile, and He was very glad that Pam did not go along on this trip, as it would have been a truly horrible experience for her!

Steve was working on the cost when the 38feet wave approached and they literally raced for their lives on a truck up to Santiago, with the crushing sound of death behind them,
I can not even begin to imagine what that might have been felt like.

He is safe and just stranded awaiting for airline services to resume.

But He immediately mentions his deep concern for the people of Chile, what a disaster!!

Glad to hear he is safe. I only met him briefly at LART but he seems like a great guy. I wonder if they had any cameras rolling during the quake. It would be interesting footage to see if they did.

Ketch thanks for the update. I read this late last night and immediately emailed Steve but had yet to hear back. Thanks for posting the good news about him and his wife being ok.

Steve lives a few freeway exits down the road from me and has been a gracious and helpful mentor. It's rare (in any industry) that you find someone with his level of experience and expertise that is ALWAYS willing to help up and comers, especially ones that he really does not know. I'm SO glad that he is ok!

Thanks again for the info.

My pleasure and duty Omar.

In fact I like to add that via Pam's request (Steve's Wife for those that do not know) which holds much concern for Steve, even so He is okay, but He is still in Chile awaiting a way of flying back to the US, and while Steve's concern rest in his responsibility do to a 7 REDs concert Job in Seattle that He is supposed t DP, and does not want to miss, Pam's concern rests in his well being, and She worries for him greatly, in the possible after shake possibility, and asks us to PRAY for Steve and those of Chile, so hope that MY PRAIRS and those of US HERE reach Steve and Every ONE in Chile.

This threat was a rollercoaster ride emotionally. Good to hear he is alright.

Ketch,

Thanks you for the update. Although I haven't met Steve outside this forum I was very concerned. He seems to be a very nice person and a superb filmmaker.
As a Chilean I have experience on mega-earthquakes my last was back on 1985 and this are not a joke. I wasn't there for this one, but the news from my country about this tragedy are worst every minute. That is why I was wondering about Steve.

Very glad to hear Steve is OK for now. Thanks for communicating with him Ketch. Please keep us up to date as things change if you can.

Steve is OK

Steve is OK

Steve contacted family by Sat phone. He indicated he was camping on a beach when the monster quake hit. He rushed to higher ground to avoid the Tsunami that immediately followed. He indicated he had lost some gear but didnt care. He was just glad to make it through those two major events. He is making his way to Santiago and hopes to get out ASAP. He will have some stories to tel I am sure. Thank you for the concern.

Great news that Gibby survived earthquake and tsunami in Chile, also that he is OK and getting home back ASAP.

Looking forward to read about his story.

Alan, Do you know where in Chile he was working?

All the best to Gibby and people of Chile! Such disaster but at least there is real state in Chile (comparing to Haiti) to deal with the consequences of earth quake. Hope we will see some R1 footage from Gibby about this.

Glad to hear you are well Gibby.

We received pictures of shattered lights, ornaments, and damaged ceilings from one of my father's friends. That was is a two level home, 325km (200 miles) from the epicenter. One can only imagine how horrible it must have been to be several floors up in a high rise. Apparently it was hard to stand during the brunt of the quake, even at 200 miles.

Hoping the best for everyone affected.

Got this message from Gibby and just heard he just got on a plane:

Whew! Me and our Red crew just barely survived the 8.8 earthquake and 38 foot tsunami here on the coast of Chile! Our camp war right on the beach 6 hours SW of Santiago. The quake hit at 3:30am on 2/27. So powerful we couldn't stand - and it shook for almost 2 minutes! Afterwards we knew a tsunami was probably coming, so we quickly grabbed what we could, jumped in the truck and drove as fast as possible for high ground! Some of our group said they could hear the tsunami rushing in behind us! Red owner Bud Anderson escaped with me, as did his Red 5543, which I somehow found in the dark and brought! We spent the hours until daylight on high ground, then came dowm tn what looked like a moonscape - total devastation. We had no battery for the Red, so we got no R
ed footage, but we did have a still camera and we shot some excellent pics. Driving back to Santiago was long and dangerous. I'm stranded in Santiago now until airline flights start running again on Wed, and I'm supposed to DP the 7-Red camera production of Heart in concert in Seattle this Friday! Hope I make it for that. Please post the text of this TM as a new thread on Red User. To all my Red User and Red Team friends, greetings and I'll post some pics of Chile when I can. Remember to never take life for granted - it can be taken away in an instant - mine almost was here in Chile. Lastly, my heart goes out to the people of Chile. They have suffered greatly through this. Please support relief efforts if you're able. Best to all my 'Red Family', Steve Gibby
