  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stereoscopic 3D Movies

Yep. What are you curious to know exactly? It's a very cheesy (but purposefully so) teen slasher flick done in more of an 80s style than a other modern slasher flicks. The 3D is done well although there are a lot of 'jump out/suprise' 3D gags which in my opinion cheapen the medium for people who don't believe in 3D as a legitimate form of cinema. (I myself do because of past experience).

It's fun and pleasing from a 3D standpoint. The shots on the SI2K stand out in my mind from the Red shots in several scenes. There are also a handful of 1/24th shutter shots used to get more light and those looks predictably video-ish as always.

If you have a specific question about it I can try and answer it for you.

I guess you didn't like it, how did the Red shots look different than the SI-2K? Which were the Red shots? As long as the movie didn't give anyone headaches to me that is good, especially for that genre. Wonder if I should see it or skip it and wait for the next Red Stereoscopic movie.

Yeah, at this point it's all about Steven Soderbergh's 3D rock opera about Cleopatra.

I thought it was dumb as hell and yet one heckuva good ride! Cheesy and fun. I thought the 3D looked pretty spectacular. The RED footage was noise free, well lit, and had incredible depth.

The movie chose a purposely muted color palette. I'd like to see a 3D movie with more robust color. Looking forward to seeing what Cameron has done with Avatar.

A lot is being written about s3D at the moment and there is some inaccurate stuff being said specifically about Broadcasting like

- you need two channels of HD
- it will be anaglyph
- the TV sets will be really expensive
- we have to wait 50 years for holograms ;-)

So my colleague Trevor and I wanted to put down our experience of the last couple of years working on this area in writing to hopefully put the record straight with a Stereo 3D television Blog or at least move the discussion forward. Red cameras for Stereo broadcast (and of couse movies) is a topic worth discussing.

I've only set it up, haven't viewed it...although the projector did shut down on the first day! That was fun. Had no idea is was shot partially with RED.

Have been in the back of the sceen taking quick glances with glasses on...always seems to be the sex scene that I walk in on though!

Was planning on watching it at some point just for the 3D effect.

I'm amazed at the false depth perception. Its absolutely fantastic. Its a pity that it is so straining on the eyes...maybe your eyes get used to it throughout the film...do they?

We only had the 3D projector installed last week...we got previews for Bolt this weekend but the 3D isn't ready yet apparently. Lets hope we don't have to show a 2D version with the celebs present...happy days!

Sorry Joseph for replying really really late. I don't want you to think that I don't like it outright, it's just not my style of movie. It's campy movie (but purposefully so) and it definitely appears a tad low budget (seemed to be missing a lot of extra lighting that you would find in a higher budget film with a longer schedule). It is however a very good example of good 3D almost across the board. When I screened it i noticed a few shots that were causing eye strain for no explainable reason (probably due to some sort of misallignment that my eye muscles were sensing but my brain was not). Otherwise, nothing hurt my eyes and the 3D was great.

I am only guessing which shots where which as I never really sat down with anyone who knew and did shot by shot comparisons but there are several shots that appear to be SI and others that appear to be RED. My assumptions are backed up by how they shot the film. I know for example that most if not all of the underground tunnel shots were on the SI because of how much smaller these cameras were in the stereo rig when compared to the 2 red ones. These shots definitely feel a little softer (although it could have been low shutter speeds etc. that I am remembering more of that were responsible for the bulk of this impression. Establishing shots and locked off shots during the day exteriors around town appear to be red shots. They seem to have a little more "meat" to them and handle highlights a bit better. The sequence outside the hotel at night appears to be SI. Any of the shots with 1/24 shutter look bad in my opinion no matter what camera was used.

Ultimately it's a good example of 3D and a so-so example of Red one. Also the film has been very successful for it's budget so Lionsgate is very happy. Finally it contains a stereo tracking shot of a French Bulldog and that instantly earns in 100 extra points. :)

Jonathan Payne- No worries, thanks for your thoughts of the film.

Anyone seen Coraline 3D? I thought the movie was alright, the stop motion was really good.

I just watched "Bolt" in 3D today over here in Germany.

Nice use of 3D, not too many show-off gimmicks. But they still cut it very fast, like a traditional animated action adventure. Too many cuts when you want to get a good 3D feeling for my taste. They eyes and brain need a while to 'get' the shot and let the depth kick in. Or maybe I'm just too stupid. :)

The cinema used IR-triggered shutter glasses, I think from Nuvision. It was a DLP projection system. Brightness and clarity was mediocre and there was some ghosting in hard contrast areas. It's normally used as a kind of small, cheap version of an Imax theater, but they started showing 3D features a while ago.

Cinemas really need to get it right if they want to make long term profit with 3D! And filmmakers need to learn how to use it wisely.

All in all this movie was ok, but I watched it specifically for the 3D experience. And I have to say I was expecting more from it. I really hope German theater owners get their heads out of their asses and start upgrading to state of the art projection and 3D technology like Real-D or Dolby.

I thought Coraline was a solid 3D offering, instead of doing some the standard popping out the screen gimmick, they focused more on the depth aspect which was refreshing to see.

BTW I noticed some heavy color banding in gradients. Is that a common DLP problem or just due to bad compression? I can't imagine it has anything to do with the 3D.

Color banding shouldn't have to do with 3D.

Ghosting can be an issue with both passive glasses/silver screen systems or with CRT screens and active glasses.

And to give an opinion on Coraline in general: Interesting movie with a bucket more heart than "Corpse Bride" but still felt a bit hollow at times (I think this had more to do with the audio landscape and musical score than anything).

Great use of 3D. They used 3D to emphasize in the same way that they did with the color palette. The real world was shot with 'depth-compressed'/forced prospective sets while the "other world" was shot with full depth sets and therefore the 3D depth changes in the world just like the color does to emphasize different feelings. Brilliant idea! I also agree with the earlier comment that it is refreshing to see more extension into the screen rather than out of the screen. From a technical prospective too much in either direction causes eye strain though. They handled it very well and showed much restraint overall.

BEAUTIFUL ANIMATION!!!!!!!

If your watching a REALD system....You'll see 1080P to 2K however....Unlike a regular 2D film where both your HD-SDI inputs are for your full image, in 3D each HD-SDI, A and B, is for left and right eye. So you are stuck with a 4:2:2 image not a full 4:4:4

You are likely seeing this.

PLEASE NOTE that any DLP based system has to work this way. Unless you use two projects for the time being is the only way to get full 4:4:4
