  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stealing DP Credits - AGAIN! Someone DO Something!

b.gif
Steven Spielberg starting out by breaking into a lot, occupying an empty trailer and holding casting calls from inside it.

I, too, am puzzled by this inappropriate analogy. Fraud and misrepresentation are serious offences. And I'm surprised you're trying to bounce it back to Richie, as if he's the one who needs talking to. Unless, of course, I am misunderstanding your comments.

Years ago, a photographer stopped by to show me his portfolio when he turned the page and showed a photo we shot for one of our clients. I asked him about it and he said he shot it. I asked him again to clarify and with a bald face, he expanded on the lie. I just sat there stunned, knowing that this poor soul would never work for me or anyone I knew, because I was certainly going to spread the word. A good name is to be more desired than great wealth.

Richie, why do you care so much? There are lots of frauds in the world, heard the phrase "fake it till you make it?"

Clients who get burned do it to themselves by not practicing due diligence. Spending money on films is always a "risk." Stealing credits is a cheep trick for sure, not a lasting business practice either. He'll burn himself, why waste your energy on him? Life isn't fair, go shoot something, make some art, spend YOUR TIME on better things, unless you plan on a career as an online fact checker or detective.

Since you did spend the time compiling this info, I'll keep my eye out for him if I can remember the name or face in my business dealings. Is he working out of Los Angeles?

Alex Yana / Alex Yane, care to defend yourself from this thorough trashing you are taking? Any possible misunderstanding?

Will, if i could get a heads up from anyone about someone i could potentially work with, I would be grateful. I met Alex on a set and he talked a good game. There is no point to let innocent people get burned or used because i could be out shooting something. Less than an hour of my time to possibly help or prevent others from issues is well worth it.

The question is, how did he do as a DP? Talking a game is one thing, performing is another...

He was DIT - which was the first clue i overlooked when i went to the site on his business card. I remember thinking, "WOW he's really good. Why is he working on THIS job as a DIT?".

Because then he could copy all the footage for himself to keep building his reel of lies......

Unfortunately in today's world, with all of the "glitz and glamor" that is filmmaking (Or so they think), you usually come across pretentious people who will go and recklessly steal other people's work to get work of their own, or, complete wannabes that have a criminal element within them to show other people's work as their own. These people need to be hunted and shamed relentlessly.

For someone to spend weeks preparing, days shooting, and to deal with all of the stress along the way... and to have someone else steal the work and put their name on it makes me want to do unspeakable things...

I hope this prick never finds work.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get it out.

No offense to Richie but I'm not going to jump on the band wagon trashing this mans reputation blindly. I have no interest in trashing anyones reputation in fact, they can do that themselves.

Blindly? Extremely solid proof has been provided. How you are defending this guy is mind-boggling...

Some see further into the darkness than others. Yes "BLINDLY." A few posts are starting to sound like a Roman mob.

Don't confuse QUESTIONING, as defense. If I was defending him it would be very clear.

How do we know "the artist formerly know as Alex" didn't steal Richie's woman and he's hell bent on revenge / ruining his reputation? How do we know Alex isn't taking work from Richie and he's out to destroy him? How do we know Richie didn't make this all up? We don't. Richie Trimble 43 posts on REDUSER. Not enough. No offense Richie, trust is earned.

Of course, if Alex never defends himself, then it's pretty clear cut. I don't know Richie personal, nor Alex. There is so much about this case you don't know. So I went a step further and e-mailed Alex for an explanation with an invitation to post on this thread., since I'm upsetting this lynch mob. That should clear it up, and you guys are probably right but he could surprise us and be given a chance to change his direction in life.

makes me want to do unspeakable things...

Would you prefer to jump on this guys band wagon?

He never defended the first time i posted this up, he just immediately took down his site. Then less than half a year later, puts the same site up again with one letter changed. If you did some research, you'll see that he was busted a month before i found out and posted. Which btw, i wouldn't have known about this guy if it weren't for my friends asking me how i knew him (through facebook) because he was stealing credits. https://vimeo.com/38758678

For some reason, i don't think emailing him will help, but rather will probably delete the website again, and repost as a new name that is yet to be discovered.

i think the reaction to this are pretty strong because, in reality, there is not much one can actually do....it happens all the time, this guy just seems to be a special case....
we all know that in our business (or in general as a freelancer) selling yourself is such a big part of the actual job....and unless a client really takes the time to perform an in depth research, the first impression along with a strong reel/portfolio gets the job and who looks back after that? who says this alex isn't actually good at what he does? or good enough? and personable?
so the idea that this guy might get a foot in some door using somebody else's (incl yours or mine) work makes me very angry...and i am a very peaceful person....
it's bad enough that i sometimes wonder how certain people get any work...and they don't even steal other people's stuff!

Really Will? Then what was the idea behind this thread?

How times have changed...

Doing some lens research I have been stumbling on old forum threads. Thought I'd share this one by Eric Ulbrich on Roger Deakins Forum.

Latest news from a red rep. No optical viewfinder as of yet. Whats the deal with that?? Spend 60 grand on a camera with a PL mount and no optical viewfinder. How am I supposed to check focus marks at a T 1.3 on night exterior? And lets not get started on a digital shutter. Personally, nothing is ever going to beat film, its the greatest capture medium ever developed, we need to focus now on getting technology to work in harmony with it IE (higher res DI, designing the stocks for DI, making DI more affordable) rather than trying to replace film. RED one is in my mind, the empty promise camera!

Will, Eric just taught you a valuable lesson. How you react is what defines your character. Think first, then sleep, then think some more, then type :) Trust me. I've shoved my foot even further down my throat after mistakes like this one. Not pretty. You can be wrong and still be a good man, and good men are never always right.

There is nothing to question. This Alex person is clearly lying about his body of work. He lists short films, music videos, and commercial's that he has NOT been the director of photography for. It's theft, fraud, and goddamn despicable. He cites other DP's work as his own in order to steal work from others.

Need proof? How about that Kia Sorento Super Bowl commercial he lists. Pretty impressive to have been the DP for the Super Bowl commercial of a major car company.
Oh wait...
That was shot by Dariusz Wolski. You know... this guy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003011/

Here's the first thread about this clown.

Doing something like this once is a stupid mistake. Twice is just being a lying asshole.

The glitz and glamour has been a part of film for some time, probably becoming the phenom that it is in the later silent era when film began to reach larger audiences in the converted theaters and barns. It's morphed over the years, of course, but the desperation to be a part of IT is still very real. And some folks will try all their lives with their own blood, sweat and tears to break in and work as a professional. Endgames may differ, but the sacrifices are every bit as authentic. Others, sadly, will just steal it, making sure they take the better and best material to call their own. It's just too easy.

And it happpens to screenwriters and DPs and costume designers and pretty much all the diciplines on down the list. 'Yeah, hey man, I did the lighting on that gig.'

What occured to me after my recent and still ongoing tangle is that these folks feel nothing. There is no shame, there is no guilt, nor even a passing thought to the real damage they may have done to the person they duped.

They. Feel. Nothing.

And they will always be a part of the equation, and no doubt always have been. We can scream and shout that this guy should be ashamed of himself, but that will never happen. And we can start calling each other names over our take on the bullshit, and that will always happen.

Always.

As Alex illustrates, this has been going on for a long long time. Doesn't make it right, but there is also a bit of buyer beware thing going on here also. Any producer not doing a background check is probably somewhat of a novice. It is not just about the image, it is also about the compatibility with the other players of the upcoming show, the professionalism and attitude of the prospective candidate, and what kind of a team player is he or she. Producers are not only concerned with talent, they are equally and maybe even more concerned about staying within budget. Yes, it is disgusting, however pathological liars have no shame. This whole thing kind of reminds me of being offered a "real" Rolex watch for a hundred dollars by some guy in a supermarket parking lot with a pawn shop across the way. Yes it is fraud. Goes on in every business all over the world. Fact of life.
