  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steadicam Zephyr for Red One

Slow shots always require very good technique, both in your operating hand and "walking method". I have heard a lot of complains towards the Tiffen arms with regards to a ducking effect when walking.
I really can't say that I experience a great difference when switching between the G70 and the Pro arm, but I have heard a lot of complains on forums regarding exactly that. At the same time I make perfect slow shots all the time with my G series, it might be easier on the Pro arm, but I really can't tell.

Hey Anders, thanks a lot for your info! I`ll surely check it out for myself, then (luckily there`s a distributor here in Germany who rents & sells both the Pro and the G50/70). I know the "delicacy" of slow moving shots but thought there was some new issue introduced with the G series` new coaxial spring mechanics design.

It's best to try both out for yourself, as both arms have fervent supporters. I've used both the g70 and pro arm extensively, and to me there's no comparison between the two. The pro arm is better built, has less friction, and is more reliable in the field. The chassis has a lifetime warranty (ie it's almost impossible to break), and because of the canister system a broken spring or pulley can be replaced in 30 seconds. As opposed to the g70, which would have to be shipped back to tiffen. The g70 is a great arm, but if budget isn't an issue, and you can get over the idea of using a hex wrench to adjust the lift (it's not tool-less like the g70), then to me the pro arm is a no brainer. And this doesn't even factor in the quality of customer service from Pro, as opposed to tiffen's which is mediocre.

Of course I'm now one of Pro's fervent supporters, so take my opinion with the usual grain of salt...

Regarding slow moving shots, technique is more important than the arm. I've heard rumors on the g70 having issues, but I never had any issues with it so I can't say. But even if that were the case, there's plenty of other reasons to stay away from the arm.

Sleds are a little different, as long as the gimbal is good, and tiffen/pro/xcs all make good gimbals, it really comes down to how much modularity you want and what features you need. Tiffen sleds are generally a little more hi tech, Pro is very simple and modular.

Thank you Alex! Yeah, I`ve had the Pro Arm in my hands, monstrous but fantastic build quality!

Hi Eythan, PM me if you're still in the market for a Steadicam. I'm selling my Steadicam Flyer LE with custom RED cables, Power Cubes, hard case etc. It's been flown fewer than 10x. Exclusively used with stripped down RED ONE and loaded EPIC.

If I can fly the F65, with Bartech, Red Zoom, Teradek and clip on Matte box; then you should be able to fly a Red MX on a Zephyr with no worries my friends!
