I have a shoot coming up and we will be using a Steadicam and wanted find out what is the best way to wire the camera through the sled.

Anyone got wiring tips to power the RED on a Steadicam?

You'll probably have to be a bit more specific about the exact make and model of "Steadicam" you're intending to use. Most of the established owner/operators and hire places will have lots of adapters and cables to cope with various cameras and configurations, but being specific will be useful to you.

I'm checking but I think its the Ultra or might be an Archer.

I'd like to power the camera from the rig and not using the RED battery but want to make sure we have the right cables as I don't want to blow anything.

Have you spoken with your operator? XCS is one of the few names respected by the professional operators. I imagine anyone with one of these rigs can answer your questions.

Is there any specific reason you don't wish to use the RED battery? The camera body itself is on the light side relative to the film cameras we're used to flying. I found the extra weight of the battery is desired. Perhaps you're throwing some additional heavy accessories on the camera and want to save weight? Is the shot a running shot or something like that?

If you truly do wish to still power it off the sled, the camera is a simple 12V camera. I believe the connector and pin specifications can be found in another thread on this forum. You or your operator could easily get the cables made up.

As Afton says, your operator may well be able to help.

The wrinkle mentioned by Jarred was that the input power pins need to be doubled up - something about blowing up the Red's power board. Unfortunately he didn't give more technical details despite my questions.

I might be able to help making up cables, being a electronic engineer, but didn't want to post before being absolutely sure of my facts, and I'm not personally familiar with the XCS.

I flew #43 last Sunday and had no problems with the battery onboard. The main problem to look out for is if the XCS rig has a HD-SDI monitor or you'll need to downconvert (required for wireless video to Video Village).

My rig is the Ultra2 and is HD wired, so no problem there... but no down converter so video village did not exist. They also did have the black box for the HD monitor onset either... so no need to tether (bad work... bad word).

Yes, Alfeo is correct. Downconverter will be necessary. XCS sleds are not wired for HD as far as I know. Again, these are all things your op should be well aware of. Although the camera is new, downconverting and onboard powering are issues we've all dealt with for some time. The op should be quick with a suggested solution.
