How much money do you really need to start a Film Production Company?

$400.00
to make a movie $400,000.00

It depends on what you're trying to do. It takes more money to make a Hollywood feature film than it is for some viral video for the internet. (And the latter might even be more profitable.)

You can get a film financed through other sources so it doesn't "take" a lot of money to start a film production company. But you'll likely need experience... or manage to sucker people into making private investments. (I wouldn't invest in film. In Canada, producers and broadcasters will not willingly invest in their own productions.)

Well, nothing.
Cheapest way: Write down a name, add pictures, films, productions to the end and there you go.
Then: you could officially file tax and other important paperwork, dba, lawyer for LLC... still pretty cheap <$5K.

only if your business plan and accountant say so.

loans are like clock work - they come around every month.....even you don't have work.

do your numbers and then do them again before you go down that path.
what do you need to get?

Well I have no equipment of my own to start, other than Adobe Premiere CS3 software, So pretty much eveything

Make sure you make it as an LLC. That way when someone sues you they can only get the money set aside for the movie, without adding your own personal assets into the mix.

not exactly true...
even with an LLC you can be sued as an individual or owner of the company..
for example..
i was part of a film..
i was guaranteed a certain amount of money and to make it easy for the producer, i let him pay me in 3 installments..
half way through the production SAG shut the film down. (the producer is a total idiot)
anyways.. he paid me my second check the day before the film was shut down.. a week later i check my account and BOOM the money was gone.. he had purposly bounced my check..shut down the LLC..
I just sued HIM, and he will have to pay me the money.

Thanks for all the input.
And how much money do you think I would need minimum to shoot a film?

define "shoot a film "

documentary , dramatic , the front of your house ?

how much do you need to buy a car ? or go on a vacation? etc

you need to post more info on that "film" ...

If you plan on shooting union (SAG, below the line...). Lots and lots of money.

If you have not already, I would invest money in school. It takes years of good and bad experiences to understand how to run a set. There you will get contacts, who may or may not help you in your career,

el mariachi was shot for around $7000 as I recall. You should see the documentaries, rodriguez was a master of getting it done cheap, he was literally editing in camera, using water pistols as props and not even slating so he could save film. You gotta love the struggle.
