  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Star Wars 1-6, in 3D!!

I think you have your dates mixed up, the 2D blu-ray is the one being delayed till 2011 because it's not finished yet.
The article says the 3D version starts with Phantom Menace and hits theaters in 2012 which doesn't surprise me because they have to convert the films and do a really good job of it.

Sorry was still off-topic ranting about Avatar....

Hmm .. I havn't seen a good 3D from conversions yet. This has convinced me that 3D conversions just aren't ever any good. ILM is doing this conversion though ...

Regards, Matt

Call me a purist, but I like the originals. The nearest I have to them is the nice Laserdisc box set.

Look, I'm not a fan of conversions.

I am professionally interesting in seeing how well this gets done though. Most conversions to date are ... well they are really bad.

I no longer have faith in Lucas's story telling or directing ability, but I still have great respect for his technical abilities. Like Cameron he has always pushed the edge of film making technology.

So... this conversion will be the my final litmus test on 3D conversions.

If Lucas can't convert Star Wars well, then it probably can not be done at all with anything near 2011 technology.

As to whether or not its worthwhile... well the original Star Wars movies are among the few films I'd really like to see converted for 3D. Its a very short list of films that have the dimensionality needed in the original storytelling and whose immersion can be increased by 3D putting you "in" the film.

At this point I worry about changes he might make. If he would do a proper remaster of the original theatrical versions along with the 3D conversion- I'd be genuinely excited. I like a lot of the Special Edition effects replacements, but I don't like any of the story changes or additions.

Still there is professional interest.

I'll probably see the original trilogy in theaters, and at least one of the new trilogy. I suspect that the surfeit of 3D elements and compositing may make the new trilogy better suited, technically, to 3D conversion.

It will be interesting to see, and hopefully learn from.

I would totally go see episodes IV and V in 3D. I will never watch Return of the Jedi again as long as this scene is still in it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BogbtlJs1rI&feature=fvsr

F the prequels.
Wow. I must not have ever watched the special edition of RotJ, because I have never seen that clip before.

I know I've seen the first two special editions, which were bad, but not monstrosities like that clip.

Haha! Scott, you instigator!

Why not just ask which would win; A Star Destoyer or the Enterprise?

(For the record, I hate conversions, but it will be nice that my kids will have an opportunity to see these movies in a theatre, at least!)

I wonder how well ILM's motion tracking software, and 'witness cam' systems can create depth geometry for photogrammetry solutions of sets and action for the conversion? The prequels should actually have a lot of depth info inherent in the matte paintings that were projected onto geometry as well as the numerous virtual sets.

good to know i'm not alone in the laserdisc world :thumbup1:

Jason,

I think this is about the longest (most successful?) thread I have ever started!

Notice I don't think I offered and opinion:) Well, now that I saw that song clip..... I need prescription strength antacid......

Grrr...

I really wish he would just move onto something else. I like the Star Wars films...don't have that non-dying love that so many people have for it...the more he pushes this kind of thing the less respect I have for him - not that he would give too hoots about that but still.

George. Find another universe to explore...PLEASE and give us a f*cking break.

It must be frustrating having writer's block for 30 years...

Maybe he should just read 'Hero with a thousand faces again'...seemed to work last time.

I always thought that it must have been disappointing for those who speak Danish, Flemish or Afrikaans as Vader means father anyway. Kinda gives it away.

He's been looking for that book, but he can't find it. Probably buried underneath all those bags of money.

Ha!

Its ok! I believe he's got Joseph Campbell trapped in Carbonite that he only gets out on furry nights nights dressed as Chewbacca.
