  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Standard Speeds @ 5K

Hi guys,

Is there any indication that Zeiss Standard Speeds will cover the Epic's sensor at 5K? Or is this something that will have to be tested once they start shipping...

Hi,

The wider ones already porthole on R1 wide open.......

Piers, you need to ask your question a bit differently. They all cover S35. Based on the Duclos chart that has been posted numerous times in both Lens Tests and Cinematography, the longer the lens gets, the more likely it will cover Red S35, which is wider than S35. More importantly, there is a confusion as to what 4, 4.5 and 5k mean. Some of these figures do not mean that the physical size of the sensor is bigger, but that there are more pixels per sq mm. It's a bit confusing, especially since so many threads in Reduser seem to be equating sensor size in dimentions with sensor size in K's. Bottom line is that few lenses actually cover full 5k (Read Red, for one). But at this point in time, few lenses are as clear and light weight as the Standard Speeds. And for the quality, the price is still a real deal. If you look around, you can still get a set in the mid sizes, 24-100 or so, for less than $3,000 per lens. The further you go to the sides, 10, 12, 14mm to 135, 180, prices go up to $8,000+. I own a complete set save for the 12mm. People I shoot with love them.

As far as sharpness and general rendition, I find them to be fine. And they're definitely small and light - very!

But I find the flares (when they happen) to be incredibly ugly. Not like a superspeed...

Really? I have the opposite reaction. Super speeds always seem a bit soft till T2.8 and they flare very easily, mostly with a washed out look. But that's just my personal tastes.

Hmmm,

Interesting opposite opinions...

I find the Standard Speeds flares specially appealing, artistic.

Piers, I'm going to back track a bit on what I said above. I just had my 135 projected and it covered full 35, which is larger than RedFF35. It all depends on the length of lens you are using. the shorter wide angles do not have the coverage of the longer ones, which, I discovered today, have much more coverage that I was led to believe.

Hi guys,

Many thanks for all the feedback. I was curious because I used them recently and really like the image quality, not to mention the size and weight.

Tim, I take your point about not confusing K's with sensor size. I must take a look at that Duclos chart. But for the time being it seems that, apart from the widest and longer lenses, it's not really known which ones will/wont work on the Epic @ 5K?

I guess we'll have to wait and test.

Best,

Piers

I shot this with standard speeds the first day my Epic arrived. I didnt really analyze the images, but coverage looked just fine.
5K 2.4:1 with a 50mm and 85mm all wide open. I didnt try anything wider sorry.

Personally I prefer the standards over supers. The standards are still some of my favorite lenses.

At least the flares are white.

On the newer Zeiss ZF/CP lenses they are bright neon purple. Not the end of the world, but still can ruin a shot where its out of context, ie: old western period film.

The wider Standards vignette on the Epic. I used them on an Intel spot a couple weeks ago and the 16 and the 24 vignetted.
It's a nice soft pleasing vignette, but it's still a vignette. We figured "f" it we got 5K we'll just crop when and where necessary-

Greg, those standard speeds look great on the Epic! Would love to seem more footage of them!

Presumably the portholing is very evident on white or chroma cyc work, and I assume also problematic in skies? I'm considering a set for my Alexa as I've always been a fan but never used them on a digital camera, anyone have a frame grab of the issue?

is it a problem on stagework if the porthole is gone by f2.8 if naturally on stage youll obviously have easily more than a 2stop at 800asa or 320 for that matter? Well wait, budgets these days one never knows!!

I tested them back to back with RPP's on my Epic. Have to say that at 5K the standards do not hold up to the RPP's. They look softer for sure and do not pop like the RPP's. Also vignetting noted on the 16 which is pretty bad and slightly on the 24. I did not notice this on the Red at 4K but the Epic really does not lie when it comes to glass IMHO.
