No time to post pictures... working (with a D-20 ironically)
But I did have time this morning to slap up my good old 9-50 Cooke and 10-100 Zeiss lenses.
The both cover in 2K windowed! The Cooke covers completely, at all focal lengths, focus and iris settings. The Zeiss covers completely from 25mm on at all focus and iris settings. It will cover out to 10mm if the focus is set beyond 7 feet. There is a minimal amount of portholing until you focus out to infinity. This was always a problem with this model lens, even in standard 16.
The Cooke was always my favorite anyway, unless I needed the long end... which is where the Zeiss starts to work better anyway.
So for doc stuff or run and gun, seems like certain standard 16 lenses will cover!
I still have to actually test these lenses for optical performance on the Red, but it's a start...
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry,

This is very interesting, I always loved this Cooke as well. I don't have my RED yet so I would be very grateful if you could check the Cooke out in more detail. Would be much appreciated.

Best

Good to know that 10-100 Zeiss is working for 2k windowed.

Also I counting that my oldtimer Cooke 25-250 Varotal performs well in a full 35mm 4K frame.

I'm shooting some tests Friday. I'll include the 9-50.
Cheers,
Harry

Curious to see the tests you mentioned here. Did you post them elsewhere?

Also, I'd be very interested in seeing as many 16mm C-mount lenses as possible tested on Red. In particular, I would like to see how the Macro Kilars work with the Mysterium.

Alas, shooter, I got busy.
January was my slowest month in 10 years. It would have been great to have received my Red One at the start of the year.
Starting in February, I've been busier than ever shooting. Throw in three kids with school and activities, and I'm lucky I can type a few posts here.
But I will shoot some more comprehensive tests when I have a few days off.
I'm also hoping to stage a Red Day in NYC for some AC friends to get them more familiar with the camera. We'll incorporate some lens tests here. I think there are already some excellent dynamic range and resolution tests already, so I think in the interest of time I'd stick with lens performance tests (although Evin has that covered too!)
Cheers,
Harry

Posted this a week or two ago, regarding 16mm primes.

Hi,

A few years ago we picked up a set of super speeds for our SR2 (arri S16mm) 9,5 - 50. Since our Red is nearing delivery I've been curious about how much the 16mm speeds would actually cover when put on the Red... I've seen posts about various 16mm Zooms not covering much more than 2K, but I always had a sneaking suspicion that primes would do better...

Yesterday we rented a Red for a job, and at the end of the shoot we put all our 16mm lenses on. And, it turns out that they cover quite a bit :-)

Pictures are here:

Turns out we're looking pretty good for 3K shooting. I sort'a knew the 50mm would cover S35 (it's technically not part of the S16mm speed set - AC manual lists S16mm speeds only up to 25mm).

Interesting observation is that you get almost the same usable coverage from the 16mm lens in 3K as you get from the 9,5mm in 2K.

Long story short - I think we will shoot quite a bit of 3K (especially since we also have a regular (T2.1) Zeiss 85mm for our S16 kit as well.

P.S. Excuse the mess in our office, we were a bit rushed towards the end of the shoot and spent all of 5 minutes picking up these shots - and both focus and exposure is all over the place = this is not a test of the image Quality of the glass/Red, just a quick and dirty test of the coverage.

Hey Jack...thanks for posting those frame grabs...I read you original post and I am very interested as I have a set of 16mm speeds. I think that the sweet spot for me is 3K when my camera arrives as I tend to shoot a lot of slo-mo. Your post helps a lot

Harry...I would be very interested in the coverage of the Angenieux 16-44mmT1.3 zoom...I have a very sharp one and it is one of my favorite lens on 16mm...I would be glad to send you mine to test if that would work for you. My camera isn't due for a month or so (especially with the latest delay schedule). It would be really great if it covered 3K 16x9.

Thanks a lot for all the testing (by everyone).
