  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stalls when booting up

Common problem. I have the same, and many shooters with us. I hope Red address this problem - it is quite annoying!

Quick fix for now; disconnect the monitor. Works for me everytime!

I've had this happen on two different cameras on the past two weekends. My fix was not disconnecting the monitor, but removing the power plug from the back of the camera. Normally, it would start booting with no problems after that. RED, this has got to be fixed ASAP. The boot time is already bad enough without adding an extra 20 seconds to see if the camera is going to boot the first time.

Macville, what do you mean by "removing the power plug from the back of the camera"? Do you mean you unplugged the battery while the camera was stuck in frozen mode, or did you mean something else? Thanks.

Try this. Attach the battery to the camera but don't turn it on. Wait for a minute or so and then turn it on. Yeh sure it adds more time but at least it saves me reboots.

Haha. My fix is disconnecting the drive and trying again. Who knows if any of these tricks work. The thing is that it usually works the second time you try, regardless. I have become accustomed to listening for the change in the fan speed to know that the camera is doing a successful boot and I can walk away. If I don't hear that within 15 seconds I do a reboot so there is only a loss of about 15 seconds.

Boot up

If you are having this issue, can you please send me a PM with your camera details, such as s/n, ship date, firmware revision being used and accessories plugged in.

Thanks,

Thanks Stuart.
PM sent.
Seems to be a tricky issue...
I still think it may be a cable related issue, even though I tried with 2 different LCD cables. But maybe both had an issue, who knows...

Nils.

I disconnect all power from the camera where you connect the power cable. I had a new issue today where unplugging ALL (LCD, Power, Drive cable) cables and it still wouldn't boot. I switched batteries (the one on it had 2 bars left) and the camera booted right up. All I can figure was the boot voltage was strange on the emptier battery.

Matthew

1st - unplug everything but the power cord, tap the lens and boot it. if it doesn't boot up then,
2nd - unplug everything including AC cord. wait 10 secs. press power for 10secs. Reconnect AC cord, tap the lens. boot it. If it still doesn't boot then,
3rd - contact support, probably needs to be viewed by them. If it doesn't then,
4th - What a great weight paper you have!

Hope you get it to work
Good luck

do you have the hdmi cable attached during boot up... this will cause our camera to freeze

Nope, normally the most I have hooked up is the LCD, EVF, and RED Drive. It also doesn't seem to make a difference if I'm on battery or AC.

I PM'ed stuart but haven't heard anything back.

Matthew

The EVF and monitor do seem related to this issue. I was in the field yesterday shooting our feature, and it wouldn't boot at all, even after the
7th time, told my camera guy, up on the crane to unplug the EVF and monitor cables and plug back in when/if he sees the software loading, that seemed to work, had to do that 3x yesterday. Was dangerously close to pulling out the HPX500 do get the shots.

I think you are experiencing better boot up with monitor and acc. off camera because you are reducing the draw on a low batt. I have had failure to boot only when the batts are somewhat down. I use 160 wh LI batts fresh seems always to boot. Perhaps it is a booting problem with low voltage?
