  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

it has been about a month since i upgraded #0031 to the ssd module and shelved the hard drives and the cf reader and cards.

this one purchase has saved me hours per day on set.

the ssd combined with the red station, a fast esata controller ( i use the sonnet 4 port) and a fast raid (i use a raid 5 through 2 gtech gspeed es pro boxes for a 14tb raid that runs at 733 MB/s) has me downloading footage off the camera at about 14 gigs per [EDIT] minute and then even faster for my raid to the gtech graids my clients provide me with.

the hour or two i used to have to spend after wrap making copies and transcoding, now is pretty much done 20-30 minutes after wrap even with 2 and 3 cameras, ( i run two mac pro towers with rockets in each for speed and redundancy).

i would also suggest buying more than one red station 1.8 ssd reader in case one goes bad. not sure if it ever will, but i don't want to be that guy on set with no way to get the footage off the ssd cards.

ok, red is not paying me to say any of this, i just want to share my experience. i heard from one of the red dits/tech i have trained in the past and he was asking me if he should buy a ssd module, and i told him what i have written above, but i questioned why it would even be up for consideration. it is a must have. trust me in about 30 minutes after you have downloaded your first card you will be thanking me.

ok...happy shooting

Don't you mean 14Gigs per minute? Per second that exceeds the bandwidth of any known drive interface.

That sounds great! I wish RED gets up to speed on shipping these soon, I put in an order on the first day and they still seem pretty far away (according to RED)

I don't know if it has been discussed or stated elsewhere already but I'd really like to know if and how the ssd upgrade affects the runtime/power consumption compared to the harddisk (standard red drive, we're on the 320Gig versions over here). From my understanding it should definitely help to archive a little longer runtime but I don't have real world comparisons what to expect.

Would be great if somebody who has experience with both media options can share their opinion on that...

i would win a noble peace prize if it were 14g/s...i meant minute...you are correct...my mistake.

they are flawless and have not noticed any change in battery consumption, but a very good question. i will pay more attention to it and report back.

Dino or anyone else with RedMags, would you mind posting a photo of the contacts being used on the SSDs? Is it similar to CF (lots of pins in the body/reader and holes on the RedMag end) or is it similar to SD cards and the like (flat contacts on one side that can be essentially sealed to the elements)?

Cheers in advance,

Paul
