I dont know if its even possible, but is there some sort of system that i can use a 2.5" SSD laptop HDD (SATA interface) with the red scarlet/epic? Only reason for this is i can get a SSD drive for a laptop much cheaper than a redmag... If not, is it possible to use the older red drives (the actual non-solid state HDDs for the red one)???
Thanks in advance

No chance (lol)

Be careful fiddling with that. The first thing that happen is you void your camera and can not get hardware update (dragon) and sell it thru red. Technically the red mags are expensive because they are very fast at sustained high data rates and have tolerances that make them very safe to use. On the other hand tech gets better and I too would like have a lower cost red mags. I have not invested in so many red mags, but on a better DIT system that downloads the cards I have faster.

Do not try to save money on media, they're one of the most important parts of your daily work. REDMAGs have their price-tag for a reason, they're not just normal SSDs in a custom-case. They're designed to be bullet-proof and to fit the needs of our beloved Scarlets/EPICs. Cheap consumer SSDs (how many software-bugs of those things where in the news the last few years?) and highend professional Cameras, this just doesn't fit.

There are things you can do without adding the risk of courrpted (or even lost) data and voiding warranty. how about investing in a fast laptop with USB3.0 or ESATA and some external harddrives and/or big internal SSDs? Try to speed up unloading REDMAGs but don't do it the cheap way, i would always do two copies on different media, before i format the REDMAG.

Besides that, cheaper media is planned by RED, they announced 32GB Scarlet-REDMAGs at NAB.

P.S.: Did have a fun-shoot yesterday, and i was surprised how far i did come with just one 64GB REDMAG and 2 batteries, i didn't expected that to be a usable package, just wanted to make some tests, but after that experiment i have to say it can be usable, just try to be economic. But yeah, more would have been welcome. ;)
