  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD ETA & general reactions

I love this SSD business but what's up with shipping turnaround times? I have a friend who ordered a Red One SSD module & cards back mid-Decemeber and still hasn't recieved a notification. I'm interested in going this route but it would be nice to know if it's going to be 2 weeks or 2 months before I get it...

Red?

Also, the few people that do have SSD, how do you like it? The only thing I'm not digging about the whole program is the initial cost. Why is it that the original CF module cost $500 while the SSD module costs $1500 for what looks like a similar piece of hardware?

How would you feel if you paid for the camera and red raids (#206) and when it was time to ship red tells you it may be weeks before raids are available so you add that CF module and 3 cards (which you never wanted since 8 gig CF is about worthless for an underwater shooter.) a few days later they ship the hard drives but won't allow a return on the -unused- CF setup. I've been very hesitant to say negatives cause of the whole bad attitude thing, but red has been seriously bad on this accessory/media situation and I'm hearing it all the time - from people who bought R1s because I went out of my way to explain and recommend it - and are very frustrated but also afraid to say anything. And now it's happening to some of them after I recommended the SSD module upgrade.

Not to be too harsh, but "c'mon man" this is hurting both of our reputations.

I still don't even know what the damn Epic X package consists of! So it's hard to make predictions at this point.

Jay

And I'll ditto what jay said.

I dont think so David. I think Red has made it clear that Epic will not work on CF (except maybe some 4k or whatever) and that SSD is now the only way forward. CF is for Scarlet and Red, but 16gb is the last CF.

Shawn,

I was under the impression you could have your EPIC shipped with a side CF module, but that the 16GB CF card could handle much of what you need but not all of what you need.

I remember there was a long SSD thread I started a while back wondering about pricing and there was never anything solid decided.

@ JA Kelly

Jay. You know right now that you are getting what you put a deposit on before May of last year. That you know for sure.

What is unknown as far as I know:

-if there is a cost difference
-if there will be an "alternate configuration" to what was part of the deal in MAY

I honestly do not think that RED knew that they would dump CF and go with SSD, but I am very confident they will do the right thing for their customers.

I think there is integrity in the company and I believe they will do what is fair. I'm not going to freak out.

I'll just order up the base station now and the media. If the SSD is "extra" I will have to deal with that as it comes.

What choice do we have? To not take delivery? No way!

David

Freaking out

Freaking out

David:

Nobody's freaking out, they are trying to do some business planning regarding cash flow, purchase decisions, productions, promotion of new capabilities, or whatever - which is just smart business. All of the stage 2 depositors have been pretty darn patient, even though we are all excited like kids on christmas eve. But the camera was "released to production" months ago with projection for initial "production" cameras in February - which is tomorrow. I know it was "late february" and we all know the "letter of the law" is we will have 30 days notice - but good sense and common courtesy suggests that, given how long it has been since very substantial deposits were made (not the token, based on a render, $1000 R1 deposit), you would give your customers as much info and lead time as possible. AFAIK we don't even know our number in line, which could have been handled by an intern or $10/hr temp worker 8 months ago.

We aren't freaking out or raising a big stink - everything in the past is water over the dam (or under the bridge) and on the whole it has all worked out to be a pretty good deal. And we trust RED will be fair in whatever final Epic-X package they come up with, but there are other things involved so we are just sayin' "c'mon man, need the info, throw us a frickin' bone here"

Media should be Red's top priority right now if it isn't already.

SSD cards are coming very soon in very large numbers... and RED DRIVES are back in stock in the store tonight.

We are getting better.. but we are still incredibly horrible at guessing shipping dates. We have learned alot over the last couple years but nailing accurate shipping dates is not one of them... And as many times as people tell us " double the time a vendor tells you " we just don't seem to listen :(

Thanks for the update Jarred!

Any word on the side SSD module for RED One?

Trying to decide if I can wait for the SSD's or need to add another drive or two in the interim.

Thanks again,

Steve

I'm with you Greg,

That would be my first choice.

(And actually you've received at least three and a stack of SSD's, :-) see I've been paying attention :yesnod:)

I've had SSD orders in place since the moment they went live on 12/8 at noon, but other people with Red Drive backorders were appropriately kept at the front of the line where they belong. I've already got two SSD Red Stations on "Ready 5" locked but unfortunately not loaded. :-)

There has been some feedback on SSD's being out of limited availability status over the next two months, but not any updates on the side module for RED One that I'm aware of, so I don't know if that is an additional constraint that will impact availability for SSD use for those of us converting current cameras as well as gearing up for our Epics.

Either way I'm happy to hear about drives being available again. While I'm planning on being 100% SSD in practice, a RED Drive is a nice option to have for the current camera even if it's just a relatively inexpensive "get out of jail free card."

i ordered ssd mags and red stations, will let them deliver with epic.
dont want to use the red drives with epic.
i did the same last time (delivery of the r1) with the EVF and Drives....worked.
btw. Jarred said its a good idea to order the ssd`s now :)

but everything subject to change

I'm looking hard for this post by Jared but can't seem to find it. Did he say this in reference to Stage 2 or Stage 3 customers?

Excellent news!

Prost,

i am with greg. thanks to luck, good timing and a bit of faith/trust i get to be a little ahead on much of this stuff and i gotta tell you guys, it is worth the money. if time is money then the ssd is money in the bank.

i have saved so much time over the past couple of months using my ssd, it is incredible how fast footage downloads. as far as reliability, i never had problems with any red media (8gb, 16gb, raid, ram) but these ssd modules make life so much easier by not having to worry about loud bass, vibration, driving, helicopters...any of that...

they mount quicker, format faster and are a hell of a lot lighter than ram and raids not to mention the dropping of the cradle and or other mounting devices.

if you have the money or more importantly will be able to charge for them, get them...no more pins! not more failure points to worry about, no more cables...

ok i have said enough on this post and on the thread i started to talk about this same thing...

happy shooting...

side note...outside of toledo ohio right now, snow storm outside, just walked to the BP gas station about 1/4 mile from the hotel on a desolate road off the highway...props to all of you guys that still live in these cold weather areas...left NH 24 years ago...can't say i miss this.

Michael.

I did not accuse anyone of freaking out. I just said "I" was not freaking out.
We had a very similar thread around business planning etc. Not long ago.

For the record, I am as exited as everybody else and maybe I recognized that I could be freaking out, or worrying about it, but I am not because I have confidence in RED.

I honestly think they are working out the best way forward for themselves and their customers in light of all the new stuff we know.

The facts remain that we can plan best when we all know and not really a moment before. Similar to how we had to decide in 2 or 3 I think options will be put before us.

I think that RED will acknowledge Stage 2 people for committing our cash the way we did because I believe that we (the customers) are an important part of the equation.

So I want to say that I did not say anyone was freaking out. Just that I am not and I've stared the reasons why. Here. Very publicly.

David.

So RED drives are not EOL'ed?

Cheers!
