I love this SSD business but what's up with shipping turnaround times? I have a friend who ordered a Red One SSD module & cards back mid-Decemeber and still hasn't recieved a notification. I'm interested in going this route but it would be nice to know if it's going to be 2 weeks or 2 months before I get it...

Red?

Also, the few people that do have SSD, how do you like it? The only thing I'm not digging about the whole program is the initial cost. Why is it that the original CF module cost $500 while the SSD module costs $1500 for what looks like a similar piece of hardware? It would be nice if Red offered some kind of bundle program in the future. (2) 128GB cards will get you a free Red One SSD module. That way you get more people into the program because in my book, that's a pretty steep cost. Especially when you factor in the actually dumping stations you need to get the footage out of the cards. If you're doing it right, you should buy 2 of those things and that's an extra $500. So $2000 just to get the components to read and write, not even the media. Help us indie filmmakers out Red. We want to join you in the SSD ranks but A LOT of us are turned off and not saying anything about it. Well I'm saying something about. Realistic shipping times & a more affordable program to enter this new media market you've created.

Well, consider the connection port is a custom proprietary design. That kind of engineering comes at a premium. Also remember your images are not going to look any better because the SSD's are enabling any higher data recording specs. Your camera will still function and record just as well as it always has. So don't think of it as missing out on the latest and greatest just because you might not be able to afford it.

Don't get me wrong the SSD module is a huge step forward in recording ergonomics for the R1. But it's not really necessary unless you need to record for extended periods of time in environments where you need media that is not prone to shocks/vibrations.

Well considering the fact that RED EOLed the Red-Raids, Red-Rams and have stated 16GB was the limit for the CF route, it sounds like our media options are indeed limited. A new Red One customer would have to either buy their media used or go SSD and if they go SSD, damn that's a way steeper cost for media than when I signed up... I know SSD is better and everything but I'm talking bottom line here

It's true. Before with Red you could get two Red drives for $950 ($1900 total) and away you'd go, super long takes. You could rock a feature. Now to do the same thing on SSD would be 2x 128gb, 1x SSD module, 2x red ssd stations: $5600. Yikes!

Although I don't feel that RED owes us anything in the way of discounts or special deals, I do have to agree with Rick that the cost of media just went WAY up now that RED stopped producing the RED Drives. In my opinion, the RED Drives have always been the Achilles heel of the camera with regards to reliability, but it's still tough to beat 640GB for $900.

Edit: Shawn beat me to it.

Maybe I have great luck but I've never had any issues when it comes to reliability on those Red-Raids. I've shot a ton of footage since 2007 too. No problems. I'm all for SSD! I just wish Red was still offering Red-Raids, SSD, and higher capacity CF cards. If SSD is the only option moving forward then I'm a little sad and so is my checkbook.

In in there with you Rick. I'm not going to invest in SSD before I can at least buy them off the shelves. My business just can't handle the cost without knowing exactly when they will ship - especially now that EPIC seems to be coming within just a few months.

Yes, the only question for those who ordered a stage 2 Epic is... will there be enough SSDs available when our Epics ship ?

Or would it be wise to order a couple in advance, just to be sure to get them when the cameras are ready to ship ? So far they seem to only be available in small quantities, and the demand for them is gonna explode as soon as Epics start shipping...

Having one foot in each camp as a user, these questions confuse me... Really. And red just has to make a decission. It seems they have.

As me, I wouldn't mind hacking som old red-drive cabinets to get my stuff done.
I could have fieldtested CF cards and used those I found to be useable.

No problem.

As the guy who is ultimately responsible for image and technical integrity of many months
of high-cost shoots... I wouldn't let anything like that near the set. Actually I am only relieved that the SSDs are comming and cannot get them fast enough.

These questions (like a prores module...) really tear me apart!

:-))

i ordered ssd mags and red stations, will let them deliver with epic.
dont want to use the red drives with epic.
i did the same last time (delivery of the r1) with the EVF and Drives....worked.
btw. Jarred said its a good idea to order the ssd`s now :)

but everything subject to change

Yes, that's my opinion too. I think I'll order a couple soon, just to be sure... It would be stupid to get the camera, but no media to record onto...

Hey Guys,

I hear all of you and I can understand the concern but I really think that RED knows that this is important and they are really thinking it through. I actually think that they are coming up with what is most fair.

I think it's been quite here precisely because they have been figuring this out. I for one, don't want to stick to what they said last May when we put our deposits down becuase there is proabably a better path for all of us right now.

SSD is one of those things. I agree it is expensive, but we all want to max out the technology right? We don't want to drive a ferrari on 87 octane fuel?

SSD will be an option. The EPCI will come with the CF card reader you paid for. Look at how tech is going. APPLE released it's air laptops with SSD drives.

It's a great time for CF as well, and you will be able to shoot high quality 5K to 16GB CF media. SSD is the turbo engine.

I say this because I have felt this before, but I have always found that RED has been extremely fair and has shown a great deal of respect to their customers.

there is no epic with cf module asfaik.
just ssd with cf adaptor for those who want.
its not clear, if the ssd module is included in the stage package though.

best is we lay back and wait

Ordered mine in Dec. just to be on the safe side and for tax, wont need them before I get Epic.

Have you received them yet? I'm assuming no? lol

If not, have they given you any idea when they might ship?

Oh, by the way, it's my first post! Long time lurker...

We (hopefully) should be out of backorder on REDMAGs in the next month or so. This includes all open RED-DRIVE and RED-RAM orders plus new customer orders for REDMAG placed to date.

BC

Looks like the SSDs will ship out in one big batch in about a month.

I ordered one on Dec 8 and one Jan 15 and don't have them yet.

I don't need them until I get my Stage 2 Epic but that's a bummer for people who want to get SSD for R1 right now.

I dont think so David. I think Red has made it clear that Epic will not work on CF (except maybe some 4k or whatever) and that SSD is now the only way forward. CF is for Scarlet and Red, but 16gb is the last CF.
