  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD Drive as an alternative for "conventional" raids

SSD Drives are not really recommended for media use. They have a limited number of read/write cycles. Yes, it's a large limit, but it's still a limit. Eventually the drive is *GOING* to fail. And depending on your RAID setup, you could be SOL when that happens.

If you've got the cash to spare, more power to you. But you're probably better off buying new GPUs, CPU Upgrade, More RAM, anything before trying to build a SSD RAID array.

(As a side note, wouldn't an array of SSDs be a RAD? Or a RAED? RAID stands for Redundant Array of *Inexpensive* Disks, after all.And SSDs are anything but inexpensive.)

I have an ssd boot drive with a sandforce controller and have no problems. if you have a mac pro get 4 2terabyte caviar black drives for an 8 terabyte array. cost about $600. you'll get over 500MB. I'm export min of r3d to 4k dpx in about 2 mins. no red rocket involved.

Hi guys,

did anybody already installed SSD-Drives in his MacPro? Everybody talks about the enormous speed of these drives - so I´m interested if there already experience with the RED-workflow out there.

Cheers

Thomas.
Thomas,

Jeff Kilgroe, a mod here on REDuser, posted a most helpful explanation about SSD drives. I don't remember what thread that was in... possibly Jay Kelley's thread about building a workstation... maybe someone, even Jeff himself since he is active on the board, can remember where that post is located.
