  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD And The Komodo

Any news on SSD and Komodo? Is that even possible? Would love to be able to use my EVO's with the Komodo.

Well, I suppose you can technically use the CFAST to M.2 SSD thingy from SolidPod IF the camera see the media correctly through that (but since RED said multiple times that the little media bay door on the Komodo is user removable in case you need to I assume they were thinking about those who would like to try this kind of adapters).

They also make one for mSATA SSDs if that's more your thing. (note that due to the CFAST side of things, the bandwith is limited to 550 MB/sec on any of these)

I am going with cfast to mSATA SSD solidpod. Its going to be released within 2 weeks. Hopefully there is no issues!!

There's a ton of similar adapters on Amazon. Also, I think Phil Holland was playing around with an SSD solution if you want to hit him up.

I thought about directly recording to SSD too. I have personally seen CFast AB card go bad with my friends new Komodo. I think it is crazy to have 1T CFast cards and hope your footage survives to reach your computer to get downloaded. So, I decided SSD but a different approach. Use 2 256 CFast so I get 15 mins give or take per card. When a card fills up, swap it out and start a transfer to an SSD using this device https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1481554-REG/nexto_di_nps_10_cfast_portable_all_in_1.html

Treat the CFast like they are film cartridges. This way on set if I have an issue with the card, I can try and reshoot it before I leave the location, if possible. If you look at the cost a 1T CFast card is $1K or 2 - 256 for $500, Transfer device $400 and $200 for a 2T SSD is $1100, only around $100 more for this process, and you have the added reliability before you leave the set.

I'm going to wait for SolidPods solotion. Very slim, attractive, mountable and the MSATA cards price point allows me to easily have 10tb in usable storage. This is the very solution I needed!!! They even list the KOMODO as a supported camera. I called them and they stated that they will be shipping in the middle of January.

Thank you Bastien for the link!!

Nice video: "...and here's bunch of cheap crap that doesn't work for the Komodo". I guess it's a good what not to buy video.

I appreciate your response to my post but why do you feel the need to be all snarky about it? LOL

And you should probably watch the video before you comment on it. It shows two cheap media options that work. They’re not ideal for every scenario but they work. The silicone power cfast card is not able to shoot in all flavors but at 6K MQ 23.98 FPS it’s flawless. That’s good enough for 90% of my work. Also, the SSD option records flawlessly in all flavors with zero dropped frames. It’s just a messy set up.

I would like to see a replacement door with built in interface port. This way dust protection could be maintained. I don’t like the idea of keeping the door open all the time, but I do like the economy of shooting to external storage.
