I've been using the power supply for my 1.8'' SSD redmag reader this whole time, but just now i plugged it into my retina macbook pro with just the firewire800>thunderbolt adapter and no powersupply and noticed it had already turned on. is it okay to just use it like this, or do you still need the power supply? i'm wondering if its mounting right now but the connection could cut off during a file transfer due to no power supply? let me know!

The red coloured 1.8" 512GB Redmag absolutely requires to be powered from the mains power supply (draws more current than FW/USB ports are rated at).

The smaller ones can run off bus power, but again Red strongly advises that mains power supply should be used whenever possible.

use the power supply, an esata cable, and one of these -

http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Suppo...qid=1441198130&sr=8-7&keywords=esata+to+usb+3

you'll get a lot better performance using usb 3 instead of firewire.

or use the thunderbolt port with a sonnet esata over thunderbolt to move your data even faster - but it's a lot more expensive than this widget.

it seems safe to run the firewire to thunderbolt adapter, but the only reason to settle for this frustratingly slow performance is if you are doing a lot of fieldwork and are trying to run with the minimum amount of cabling....
