Shawn : it is very good to have it connected to your monitor
TRY TO have the one called SPyder Elite. it is good add to your computer monitor based color grading .
IT Doe's calibration (full color analys) at the bigning afterthat it stays
( working)all the time measuring your ambient light changes and fixed your monitor according to those changes .
IT should be connected (but only for one monitor)
EDIT " It is good idea to use for multipile monitors ( it has USB based connection). i didn't try it

Shawn-

I have it, works great. I use it on all my computers. You can calibrate multiple computers with it. It'll give you a notice when it thinks you need to calibrate again. Usually a few days to a week. There doesn't seem to be a limit on how many machines you can install it on.

is it connected to more than one monitor at the same time ?
How ? do you use USB hub (or some divider to calculate ambient ) for all monitors ?

Bassam, I dont think the sensor needs to be connected unless you are in the process of calibrating, then you can disconnect and put it away until next needed.

Marc, what was better about it?

I find the profiles more accurate. I need the monitor for soft proof (large format printing) and to switch after for Video monitoring is very easy. Maybe there is´nt anymore a big difference between the systems now, but two years ago it was strongly visible (You should call BH and ask their opinion too).
The good thing about eyeone too, it´s multiple licence for CRT,LCD,Laptop. You could buy it together with a couple of friends. If you work under similar light, it is enough to calibrate the monitor once a month.
Whatever you will buy, you will never go back to calibrate by eye. It´s a fantastic little tool.
Hope this helps a little!
Best,
Marc

Has anyone calibrated an on set HDMI monitor with the spyder?
Is it posible?

I use Spyder 2 Pro- Tones are good but our colorist find the image too dark/gamma low. Working to figure this issue out. For stills, my 'ol 12" Powerbook is limping along with shockingly good results. Have it and my iMac profiled same and they are consistent. But you MUST calibrate while gear is warm or results are crazy-wrong. I'd tell you my long CompUSA story (this is software/no, it's hardware) but it's kind of irrelevant.

I have both and have not had great results out of either. If you calibrate just one monitor it looks fine. But out of the 12 monitors I run if I put any of them side by side after calibrating they all look different. I can calibrate a monitor twice in a row in a completely black room and get different results. So it really make me wonder how accurate they are!! I now solely only rely on our broadcast grade ones.

Cheers, Chris

Chris, I agree with that, but the first 90% is possible to reach with a calibrating tool. 95% with a hardware calibrated monitor. 98-100% with high-end monitors (e-cinema).
The Spyder/Eyeone are good low cost solutions, much better then non calibrated monitors.
Working with it, it´s a "in house solution". Good, if you are in charge of the product till the end.
Cheers,
Marc

Yes I find the Spyder wants to darken the image a little too much.
But hey I don't have to if I don't wanna.
and its need to go thru a gracphics card but there's also a little catch. On XP machines it takes all sorts of jiggery pokery to get the OS/spyder software to load 2 separate calibrations on the one dual head graphic card to be able to calibrate two screens separately.

No it needs to run through computer software

I knew I would get that response..... :)

I mean, can you plug your LCD, PLASMA Monitor (TV), to your macbookpro on set and the sypder, and make a calibration? Is that possible?

Is it posible to calibrate "TV`s" with the spyder or just PC monitors?

Thanks.

As far I know just PC monitors. If you can connect a TV on your PC as a PC Monitor you should also be able to calibrate it. But, the software and profile is always working from the computer. So, without computer connection, no calibrated monitor (with tools like spyder).
