Speed ramping

Why does ramp triggering require an external trigger? Why can't it be programmed to, for example, one of the user buttons on the side?

I assume this was shot with ramping on record? How do you set it to ramp on event. I've been trying to figure out how to get a nice ramp in the middle of the shot. What is this GPI trigger?

View Factor's Origo I think can act as a GPI trigger to set off your ramp. To my knowledge, you need to do 3 things. Setup your camera accordingly (GPI menu set, and variable frame rate and ramping enabled), connect your GPI trigger to the camera, and then press the button when you want your ramp to start.

So RED doesn't have their own trigger? Which port does the GPI plug into?
