So I got to thinking this morning after reading an article the other day about Apple getting rid of a good portion of there Pro Division, and trying to sell there pro app division. I'll update with a link when I can find the email. It pertains to FCP X release and what changes Apple made in the transition as a company. I think it was on Creative Cow.

So the main idea behind the thread is, Would it benefit RED to consider making a Pro Editing Application? I think the benefits could be there, no work arounds to start editing, obviously you don't have to with some programs, REDCine X would already be there to help, and they could even integrate a Coloring/Grading system as well perhaps? I was thinking about it after I woke up and thought I'd share it here. I'm no genius when it comes to developing applications, but I thought a Company like RED that is changing the game in Cameras clearly has the experience to build software to some extent. And a PRO Editing App to go along with the RedRocket card and RedCineX would be awesome!

Sorry to ramble, just thought it would be cool to drop the idea off.

I like the idea! They are 1/2 way there with RCX.. just not sure if the demand is strong enough.. It would take A LOT of money to make the software, and let's say there are 30000 REDS out there, they would have to charge A LOT to recoup their investment.. That is if EVERY owner bought one..

I think there is a reason RED's apps are currently free.
The amount of customer support for free apps is significantly lower than those of a paid and/or professional app.

Developing and running a software company is just as intensive as what they're already doing, not sure people would like the delivery delays that would be associated with them branching out into the software arena.

my 2 sense.

Thanks for the replys. I guess the idea would be that it wouldn't only be for .r3d files, or RED footage but for all editors. They're a company that listens, and talks directly to the people they sell there product to. From the top down. I understand the time and investment it would take, but I think it would be cool if they added a division to maybe add on? Just a thought I had. Obviously they could charge for it what it'd be worth. I'm sure it won't happen, but thought I'd atleast see if there were others out there who had maybe thought the same or would be interested in it.

Don't worry, Apple isn't selling off it's Pro Apps division. Though, if RED did develop an NLE they'd probably do it with one of their trusted 3rd party vendors like The Foundry.

I agree. I think a NLE system from The Foundry would rock. A start is what they've done in Storm!
