hi there
i don´t understand how spanned r3d files work.....if i have, say, four r3d files for my long take, i can import the first 3rd file into redcine, but not the other ones, and the imported file shows the full take...i though each file contained a portion of the take, for takes longer than 2GB...what does each r3d file actually contain ?

concerning the proxies, i can watch any proxy in qt player.......... if i remove one of the r3d files, the proxies are no longer watcheable......however, i can still watch the full clip in redcine...don´t get it

i know there are several threads about spanned files....could anyone redirect me to those threads ?

thanks a lot

Each red file is completely independent of each other, but if you import one of them and the filename has the eg. _001 or _002 in the name, the others in the "sequence" will be taken into account. The _001 doesn't refer to a _002 as such, but the software will by default read the sequence.

I am unsure what linking mechanism they use for the spanned files (but see below), but you need them all to exist in the same directory to be played by the proxies.

Redcine will read an individual spanned file, which contains only the portion of the clip that is stored in that file.

As for what links the spanned files, it could be either that
(1) there is a link embedded in the r3d segment file(s) somewhere; or
(2) the spanned files' co-existence in a directory signals the reference software to concatenate them.

I assume the former, since a file-restore learning program will physically concatenate the files when given samples of r3d files, rather than leave them discontiguous (it forms a >2gb file that is unplayable).

Whatever the case, Redcine will overlook a broken "link", whereas the proxies have not the intelligence (or perhaps the careless abandon!).
