  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Spanish Resort film, Scarlet Dragon

Exactly Brian, its a fantastic camera, have just upgraded now to epic dragon which was a tough decision as the scarlet offers so much.

The quality of the image looks fantastic. I don't mean to derail the thread but did you have a specific reason for upgrading?

Hi Joe,
I think the main selling point is the frames rates, I never really go over 50fps, but changing to 4k to do that is abit annoying, now I have lots of options and can sell the cam a bit more on jobs. Also 6k seems a bit cleaner noise wise at higher iso. I had to send the camera to red to get the olpf update so I could use the changeable olpfs, and I was thinking of a fan upgrade also, so with those things considered the upgrade price was not too bad. And finally I guess it just keeps me up to date on tec and possible upgrades in the future.

Its been a good ride with the scarlet, I could give people a red, at a reasonable rate, and it didn't cost a fortune. I was always a bit against getting the epic, partly because it was so expensive to buy in one lump and this is prob in my own head but I saw people being looked over for jobs that came thru rental houses when they have too much gear, you end up in competition with the rental houses, the scarlet meant I was not in direct competition with them and could get jobs using their gear. I made the money back now just about so can take a leap on the new cam, hopefully the move will make sense. And I sold my red pro primes and will be embracing the larger sensor with stills glass, really enjoying the foolcontrol.

Ya really cant fault the scarlet, but took the offer for the upgrade as it was kind of too good to pass on.

Awesome Ian, thanks for the detailed reply. It definitely looks like the scarlet brought you great success, so here's to hoping with even more with the epic :coolgleamA:

Really Great!

Ian, curious as to your frame rate in the aerials.....

Thanks Ksawery,
lens as it was a small job overseas were, canon 24-70, sigma art 18-35, 50, rokinon 85, and sigma 70-200, mainly solid nds with an occasional variable nd. Also used the follow focus app with foolcontol. Was crazy expensive to rent locally so only had 2.5, 2x 1.2 hmis and a few tungsten red heads and dedos and a led panel. Used an indie dolly also [which is a bit of a night mare to put together] and a small steady cam, cant remember the model.

Main thing in our favour was the great light in that part of the world, such a pleasure to watch the sun rise there and see things come to life in the space of a few minutes. It was interesting as the director loves back light so mainly the dinner scene was a bit of a step outside my normal approach, but found it great to take chances and try something new. Any slow mo, including helicopter was at 50 fps 4kws, the rest 5k ws 25fps.

Cheers
Ian
