  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sound Devices PIX 240 ProRes/DNxHD Video Recorder with EPIC

Cool Jarred...

+1 on Sven questions, been curious about it...if this is possible, then it will be good for those who feel 1080P prores is enough - answered thru http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/category/pix/

2. What type of media that is used inside the PIX 240 ? - answered thru FAQ - NVM
3. How big is the drive ? - answered thru FAQ - NVM

4. How does it react to high framerate shoot in 300fps, if im not mistaken SDI limits is at 60fps...will PIX 240 still record ? answered max at 50i

Thanks

I got mine Saturday, 2of them actually. So far they work phenomenally, but beware, both of mine have washed out screens, so don't count on them for color or exposure. So far there seems to be no way to adjust the color aspects of the screen, other than brightness, but the files it spit out are perfect. I've been feeding it mixed audio from a 442, and AES from a 788, flawless. Nice to spit the time code, and file names straight to pix files, and also pass red time code to the 788 files when quick, simple setups are needed...

I will confirm tomorrow, but I believe the way it works is that it's when you go into record on Epic that then triggers the PIX240 to begin recording.

Another nice benefit of this device is both outputs are simultaneously active. This makes the PIX 240 helpful for converting between HDMI and HD-SDI.

Hopefully can answer a lot more questions after tomorrow. We will be using this for an actual shoot on Thursday/Friday so should have the full scoop.

Also of note, if red would allow for 'record run' as a time code option, perhaps in future firmware, then we could trigger both the pix as it does now through SDI flag, and also the 788 for multitrack recording.
I got 2 pix caddys, which had to be purchased separately, ws not real clear back when I ordered them that they were not included, they are an awesome solution with all the added connections, but if you don't have the caddys then you can still use CF cards, or esata drives...

Steve & Chris, how much do you buy it ?

Correct. The Start/Stop goes from Epic over hdsdi and the Pix triggers off that.
As well as using the TC and full clipname from the camera.

For non 16:9 Epic formats, it will be letterboxed into 16:9
but we will have more options for how to deal with that in upcoming firmware.

Also, 4k HD will get updated so it's full frame.

SD said the 240 was not designed to be able to record 4:4:4. This is not coming with an update.

That was a long time ago so if you are on the fence because of this you might want to ask again.

Hi Roberto....

I read this from the FAQ :

Does the unit record uncompressed, or 4:4:4 video?
PIX recorders record up to Apple ProRes 4:2:2, 10-bit at 220 Mb/s at a maximum frame rate of 1080p 30. The recorders don’t accept dual-link streams or record 4:4:4.

http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/pix/pix-faq/

And i also take a look at video where he scrolls thru different type of compression, the 444 is not there...so im sure it is not included since it only take single stream HD-SDI and not dual.

EDIT : I will email them and see whats their reply

This a great solution. It's pretty heavy though. How are you guys mounting it?

another awesome device...great!

One of our local audio dealers is starting to deliver on pre-orders.

First of all, I think this device is amazing. Besides the high quality Prores encoding, you get an extra monitor, Timecode Jam/Sync, built-in cross/up/down converter, AND top of the line powered, XLR inputs. It really does seem like a kickass product, and I can't wait to get my hands on one (Abel Cine took my money long ago, but it's been "backordered" for weeks).

A couple of points:

wow, thats convenient... but requires an SDI output.
It has HD-SDI passthrough, so I don't see how that's an issue.

I think a dsmc module with similar functionality would be a waste of Red's time right now.
While the PIX is really exciting (and I intend to use one), I don't agree with you. For one, having a module that connects directly to the brain keeps the profile small, light, and cable free. As it stands, we have to tap into the HD-SDI port and find a place to bolt (and power!) the PIX. While this doesn't sound too disastrous, it's just another device hanging off the camera. RED was (is?) making a proxy module that originally was designed as an H.264 recorder, but many thought Prores would be a superior option (and I agree). It wouldn't have XLR inputs (but the Pro I/O module addresses that), and in fact it offers wireless streaming which the PIX does not. So while I think the PIX is an exciting offering, I still very much hope development on the wireless proxy module is still in the cards.

For non 16:9 Epic formats, it will be letterboxed into 16:9
but we will have more options for how to deal with that in upcoming firmware.
Thanks Deanan, MUCH appreciated! Is a 5K 16:9 format still coming soon?
