I shoot mostly run and gun. I'm thinking about upping my game when it comes to audio, and using an external mixer for better control and more audio options, as opposed to shoving the mic right into the camera, setting levels through the RED menus by grace and by God, and hoping for the best!

Sound Devices 302 seems well-regarded and offers pretty much everything I want. Does anyone have anything bad to say about it?

It's a little larger & pricier than I would really like however. Any suggestions on an even more compact device that offers most of the same functionality? Ideally something I can bolt on the camera somewhere...

And if anyone has a 302 they would like to part with, message me :-)

Thanks

Mike

you will not regret investing in any of Sound Devices gear

That's a big plus coming from you Paul... thanks. Price isn't too much of an issue, compactness is. The 302 isn't really as small as I'd like. Everything I use, I have to carry up mountains and into the wilds at some point. A shrunken 302 at 1/2 or even 2/3 the size & weight would be ideal. If there's nothing that comes close to that price/performance on the market, I'll just go for the 302.

I understand your dilemma, but your type of use is exactly where the SD mixers shine: rugged, reliable, reasonably compact, sonically accurate & clean. There is a reason you will see SD gear on almost every set. We've been using their mixers and recorders for 8 years and I can't see us ever buying anything else.

Thanks for all the input guys... especially Paul, that's a ringing endorsement. The Mix Pre D is closer to the size I'd have liked, but I've bitten the bullet and posted a WTB 302 thread. I'll bite the bullet on the size/weight for the benefit of the extra features and 3rd input... I may want to record stereo location sound whilst also getting a live commentary type of track if I mic myself up with a lav or something. Gotta capture those 'oh f**k' moments when I get too close and the lava starts flying :D

Unless anyone has anything to add, that's job done. Thanks again, this is why REDuser is so great!

I downsized from an SD442 to an SD302 a coupe of years ago as my business model changed. It is a great little mixer, but even with its small footprint, by the time you add a bag, cables, backup recorder, odds and ends, the extra weight can be surprising. A rail mounted mix pre might be a more practical solution for solo run and gun work if 3 channels are not needed.

Good Luck!

Had one for years now with my Red One. I run a couple of Lectrosinics in and a Seinheisser mkh60 boom with this and it's solid, dependable. You really can't go wrong with this mixer. You can sometimes find good used ones on the C Cow website in the classifieds.

Have you seen Aeta Mixy. Some people consider it even better than SD gear.

I have a MixPre-D myself and I've been quite happy with it. I'd prefer an integrated device with a 4 track recorder and mixer, though.
