Hey guys, I have a bit of a problem. Adobe does not support project managing with r3d files UNLESS I have all the camera original r3d files in the CAMERA ORIGINAL r3d folder structures. I am trying to consolidate some stuff for the IBC show and need a way to rebuild the r3d folder structure based off all the r3d files in a folder I made.

essentially I stripped all the r3d files out and now I can't deal with project management because of that. Anyone have an idea how to do this without sitting down and creating thousands of folders for thousands of takes one at a time by hand? software?

thanks for any help

R3D Data Manager does this now using the file recovery tool. It may bea bit of overkill for your needs, since it first would find all the R3D files on a source and write them to a destination.

Now that I think of it, you may be able to trick to software to do what you want. Please note this is not supported, is completely untested, and Im not responsible for any loss of data - please make sure you have backups. That said, you could set the destination of a R3D Fle Recovery operation to the directory containing just R3D files.

Then you could create a new disk image in disk utility, and set it to be the disk to attempt recovery from. Of course its not going to find any R3D files in that image.

By doing this you skip the process of finding R3D files and get to the re-creating of folders, separated by shot date. That shoudl do the trick, but again is not tested.

Just tested with v6.1 - No luck. REDUnDead installed as well. Thinks forever.

is there any way to find the ORIGINAL .RDM name from data held in your NLE?
if you did have the original path in there somewhere and could export a list out as plain text then this would be very easy!

you would parse the text file for the original path, use "find" to find the r3d with the same name in your new folder and copy/rsync it to the path.(i think rsync will create the folders it needs but i'd have to look it up...)
all this can be done in bash in about 10 lines of code (which i'd do for ya) IF you have the original path somewhere.....

however if the RDM name is not absolutely important (ie you haven't done an edit yet) then you could just make up your own folder structure
it's all based on the metadata in the R3D file which you can get at with redline and again parse it and use bash to copy them to the folder path based on that metadata....

someone's probably already done this though, but if not let me know and i'll get something together.

It would be nice to have an R3D file repair for people who do change the file name. Since that metadata exists in the R3D file, it would be a matter of propagating back to the filename itself. A great feature for the REDCINE X backlog... of which I am sure there are many items. :)

well i'm kind of writing it for Obin...
so if/when he says it's what he needs i'l put it up here somewhere.
it uses redline (and i am including the binary in the app folder which i know you're not supposed to :-))
so your mileage may vary as i'm not sure exactly how redline metadata reporting has changed since i last looked at it!

I just wrote a little shell script to do this:

---------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash

clear
echo -n "Where are the files without folders? : "
read -e LOC1
echo " "
echo -n "Where should I create the NEW folders : "
read -e LOC2
echo " "
for FILE in $(find -s "$LOC1"/*.R3D -type f 2>&1) ;
do
CARD=`echo "$FILE" | awk -F / '{print $NF}' | awk -F _ '{print $1}'`
CLIP=`echo "$FILE" | awk -F / '{print $NF}' | awk -F _ '{print $2}'`
DATE=`echo "$FILE" | awk -F / '{print $NF}' | awk -F _ '{print $3}'`
DATE2=`echo "$FILE" | awk -F / '{print $NF}' | awk '{ print substr("'"${DATE}"'",1,4)}' `
if [ ! -d "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM ]
then
mkdir "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM
if [ ! -d "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC ]
then
mkdir "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC
cp "$FILE" "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC
fi
else
if [ ! -d "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC ]
then
mkdir "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC
cp "$FILE" "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC
else
cp "$FILE" "$LOC2"/"$CARD"_"$DATE2"AA.RDM/"$CARD"_"$CLIP"_"$DATE".RDC
fi
fi
done
exit

---------------------------------------

Did a quick test and it seems to work fine for me on a Mac. It makes the folders and copies the files to the folders. I used AA for the random characters.

Well done Dusty. Just checked and it works great on my MBP running 10.6.7.
Such a simple script to take care of this issue.
