  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony's BIG Announcement

And what price for this EX1 evolution?

Sony is bending itself backwards to make their cameras impossible to use in underwater housings: ackward body shape, non removable handle, inflexible location of the VF, not to mention a battery stickig out like a dildo from the camera's arse...

And I here I was thinking that they were making something "big" and "different". I'm not surprised at all though.

WOW - a slight improvement of the older camera and they try to sell it as a big event...patetic...and I am a EX1 owner...

I might see it as a worthfull update on the current line-up and I have some ideas about using it for some jobs where the ex-1 doesn't fit, especially handheld. I think for run and gun the rig I have just isn' t good enough and takes to long to get the camera on if it has to go very quickly.

But the most riddiculous update which imho doesn't make any sense , instead of getting forward even giving the tv stations the reason to stay in SD, which I hate btw, releasing the option to support dvcam on the ex....????WTF?????

(and this also as an ex-1 owner)

Absolutely disappointing. Can understand why though. They don't want to cannibalise their higher end models. The market will force them that way though.I was hoping big meant big sensor.....as in FF

Sony sensors seem to capture the most natural picture to me in my small camcorder collection. If they do an ALPHA VDSLR with HDMI out who wouldn't buy it?????Awwww shucks - guess we have to look elsewhere.

They have painted themselves into a corner they cannot easily get out of. But like you say, sooner or later Sony will have to walk across the wet paint.

Of all the camera companies out there, Sony is in the worst possible position to compete with Red. At least Panasonic has already thrown in the towel on their Varicams and slashed prices in half.... not to mention adopted Jim's "trade in" and "upgrade" policies. What choice do they have? Jim is getting ready to put out an arsenal of new cameras, including $5,000 2/3" 3K RAW cameras that fit in the palm of your hand and shoot 120fps! How can you sell a $60,000 720/60p Varicam the size of a small suitcase in a market like that?

Canon has jumped on board the rolling firmware features express. Nikon is jumping headlong into large-sensor video cameras. Nikon and Canon are not trying to protect $200K S35 cameras, so they are much better placed to compete with Jim.

The updated EX1 would have made more sense if they had included the new back lit chips and if they could have added HDMI without dropping SDI.

The 350 looks nice for the ENG crowd.

This is so true!

I reckon that Sony will sell lots of 350 cameras. Not everybody want to do major movies. The 350 looks well balanced and will do the job nicely for most low cost documentaries, events, etc. And it is a part of a tried and tested system, practically plug and play. Have not seen prices though, so we have to wait and see if it is worth it. And the SxS card system is also affordable, so I do not think that Sony is that worried about the competition just jet.
