The compact flash recording is an external module and it's recorded in HDV format (similar to the V1's pull-down probably), not all that exciting. Whatever the reason Sony using CF over another proprietary memory stick format is a good thing for everyone including Sony.

"Professional" HDV - is that not an oxymoron?

Compactflash makes no sense for those cameras! HDV already fits just fine on miniDV tapes. Cameras like the P2 and Red use flash because there are no inexpensive tape formats that can handle the data they produce.

WHY would you introduce a whole card-downloading step to your shooting if it is not necessary and provides no benefit?

Big benefits for camera manufacturers, not having to produce costly complicated tape transports

So that you don't have to digitize the tapes. Just go direct to NLE from data on card.

Exactly. CF cards will quickly become cheaper to manufacture than tape as well and will offer longer record times. It's the way of the future. There's also lower-cost write-once CF media just around the corner that should provide vastly superior archival abilities in comparison to magnetic and optical media and most tape formats too. FLASH media also allows cameras to adjust recording bit rates and not be locked in to the 25Mbps of a MiniDV tape mechanism. It sucks, but most HDV camera systems don't utilize the full 25Mbps rate.

I personally will never go back to a tape based workflow unless there is some very compelling reason to do so. Capturing off the tape to a system is a painful waste of time.

So with all these cameras that can do HDMI out, I assume it's possible to capture full 1920x1080 uncompressed "true" HD footage?

I think it's 1440x1080 4:2:2 via HDMI live.

Sony is pissing me off!!!! I am such a fan of their Cinealta line and I recently did a online commercial a few monthes back on a V1 (producer choice not I) and was very disappointed in the color depth and (ever changing) servo focus ring (I Focus Pull primarily). I'm seriously iritated that they haven't come out with any half decent camera's that compare to other camera companies. They have been trying to jam HDV down our throats and can't even produce a 50mbit +, true 1080P,4:2;2,Flash based camera with a manuel focus ring. There a huge conglomerate with hundreds of smart engineers that I know have made something briliant! The F23 is amazing but I doubt there gonna sell more then 100 units in the US which is the worlds largest content creators ( not for long). Where as if they made a $7-10k Camera with the above mention specs they'd sell 500 units and still make more..... I once was a die hard Sony Owner and with the exception of the CineAlta line have lost sight of who there market is.....excuse this rant please. :angry03:

Thank you Jim for being a maverick and pushing the limits of cinemagraphic tools and not adhearing to the status quo.

Nope....the US is not the worlds largest content creators......try Bollywood.
