Ok sure, 8K coming in January sounds cool. But that F65 doesn't break the mold like the Epic has in my opinion. Who could have imagined we'd be shooting 5K images (which are so far beyond what almost anyone can really display to watch now anyway) on the camera the size of a beefed up 5D?

And Redcode. And Red themselves. The Epic has so much to offer above the competition. Go America.

65k is pretty competitive for what they are offering, having this camera out there is sure to make things very interesting.
In the end I guess we won't really know what the competition is like until february when people have had a chance to have a look at the camera.

On a side note it's good that the F65 isn't just trying to be a Sony Epic, it gives the market variety, Epic gives you high quality in a compact form factor and F65 caters to cameramen who prefer something bigger shaped closer to a film camera.

This is good news for filmmakers. Gone are the days when Sony was trying to charge a quarter million dollars for a "1080p" camera.... We can thank Jim for steering them in the right direction, IMHO.

Meanwhile, Jim is gonna sell like 10,000 Epic Xs. It's all good. Production standards are going rise. 4K will overtake 1080 as the Gold Standard. The money needed to get into filmmaking at the entry level will once again go down. Everyone wins. I, for one, will never forget who changed the industry and moved things to where they are now. If Sony and Arri want to continue to compete with Jim, they better buckle their seatbelts.

Things are just starting to get interesting. :cheers2:

+1 for that. If I were Jim I'd take the F65 as competition over the Alexa any day. Not because the F65 will be easy to beat but because it's the first digital camera to really take what RED is offering seriously and try to deliver results with the same level of quality. The Alexa was the industry saying RED wouldn't last, the F65 is recognition of RED's accomplishments.

RED is here to stay and the F65 just provides another choice.

The F65 package is currently being offered at $85,000 but that price is going up in January. I am not sure what this price includes. Epic still seems like a way better buy. The F35 was priced substantially higher ($250,000?) when first introduced. RED EFFECT.

SONY has gone MAD!

And have not REALLY paid attention.

Nope, sorry, if I had that type of budget I would buy 2 Epics.

Guys, I understand that the Epic is truly revolutionary, but if the F65 really has 14 stops of dynamic range, this is also a great camera at a respectable price. I'm glad to see the big companies starting to come around.

I agree.
I've actually been quite interested to know more about this camera since I first saw it at NAB this year.
There were a few little things that I didn't like, but all in all, this looks like a solid camera that beats the hell out of an Alexa!
Good to see people raising the bar, and offering some real choices.
I'm Epic all the way, no doubt. But I can see this being quite a camera.

+1 on the REDeffect.

Thanks to Jim, Jarred and the rest of the team for forcing the big boys to bring their "A-game" or lose relevance. No doubt that products like this exist in 2011 in part or in whole due to your work. Great for the market in general.

That said, we patiently await our X.

I think its amazing that Sony has responded to the Red factor ... at all. I mean Sony has never been a company to pay attention to markets or customers or anything like that.

Then again, Sony has more often than not been right.

Without Sony - and many other companies- Red never happens.

So, this is going to be a great camera. It arguably matches Epic in many regards, exceeds Epic on some others, and misses the mark on others. Its a competitive bit of technology.

Of course, that evaluation is based on comparing a paper announcement to a shipping product. (And I'm sure Red is happy to have that shoe on the other foot!)

I think its overpriced ... at the end of the day it should be priced to match Epic X. That is to say a ready to run configuration (EVF, LCD, media, power) for $48000.

I think if you look at Epic ... nobody is choosing to use the lower compression rates. I think Brooke posted that Amazing Spider Man was using 5:1 even though higher data rates are enabled.

So, in many ways what remains for Sony is the market for users who want to spend more money on a bigger camera.

+2 Red Effect

I'm only slightly annoyed that they are stating the claim its not just a high resolution camera but a "Whole New" system. Hmm... Talk about sampling a business plan. I would also take a couple of Epics over this camera. The thing I love most about RED is not only was it a whole new system 4 years ago, but that even at the current price point, they are still making products indie filmakers can access. Not to mention the fact that the top brass is just arrogant enough to respond appropiately to the competition. Please do! You know they are daring you.
