At $16k with a PL it looks like Sony is trying to get into the Red game. Ships in Feb

Mpeg 2 long GOP Recording with 35Mbit and max. 60 fps at 1280x720 is nothing RED has to worry about. Looks for me like the functionality of an EX1 with a bigger sensor and PL mount for 10.000 USD more than EX1

It says 3G SDI RGB to HDCAMSR with a software update.... yea, 1080p, seems more like a contender for Alexa.

I think Panasonic did a better job with the AF-100. It's prosumer, but it's a very good prosumer that does not try to be something they are not.. They do not speak RED in the same sentence as this camera, what they DO say is that this camera is a better alternative than using a Canon 5D.. And on this point, I completely agree.

it's eventually gonna have dual link 444 option. with the classic sony gamma curves. If they can get the 12 stops of DR they are estimating with it, it's gonna be in a good spot. it's contenders are alexa, genesis, and their own f35... will it have ALL the functionality those cameras have? maybe, maybe not, but it's not gonna go unnoticed that's for sure. It's in the league of, it's shaping to be a very good 1080p camera... it's not RED. they don't make 1080p cameras :)

My first thoughts were that this was a stellar product IF the camera was under $10k. I do think there is a whole lot of room between the DSLR world and $25k. SONY didn't come close to the sweet spot, imo. We'll see if Panasonic does better...

Really? Would you say the same thing about the EX3?

Honestly, I can see anyone shooting with an F35 ordering this as a 3rd body, and I can also see anyone shooting with Alexa doing the same thing. That's a fairly healthy potential audience right there.

Just because you don't have a particular use for it doesn't mean nobody else does.

To me, it's just another camera to point at the zone plate of doom.

The only onboard option is 8bit 4:2:0 at 35mbit. That's the same as a 5D isn't it?
You add a Kipro and get 10bit 4:2:2 Prores, but that seems a bit inconvenient. I suppose if you want a direct to edit solution that's convenient, but really? Epic and Scarlet are going to eat it's lunch and call it's mom names.

Interesting thing is that Sony and Panasonic followed each other with of those new digital camera announcements.

And of course they also try to make some cash within the next 6 months before Epic and especially Scarlet start to ship.

The official race season of Digital Cinema Camera Championship 2011 actually started right now.

There are no strict category rules but HD 1080p is chosen as a minimum.

The winner of the race is, of course, the camera that sells within the highest number of profit.

The thing missing for me is the lack of other mounts, Canon and Nikon obviously. 444 won't come till a year later apparently but even so I think this would have been a contender if they had got it under 10K USD. Mind you let's wait as usual for footage.
