I'm trying to make this call and it's come down to wether the 12 megapixel stills on the A7S2 is sufficient for a 4K finish. I don't do any print work and only use the stills for scouting and time lapse for my shoots. I just don't want to have to use another camera to get time lapse done. The extra stop or so of useable ISO is nice as well as the 120fps at 1080 instead of 720, but I wouldn't say it's a game changer. Most of the time I'll be using the camera as a budget option to the Epic Dragon. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.

For hero stills only A7R . . . it has a huge sensor
For motion and lowlight work A7s
Like if you timelapse the night sky then A7s
The A7R has an interesting S35 mode for 4K motion but the A7s still is better at motion
The PP8 / Slog3 is rather amazing for motion
The Batis 25mm, in autofocus, on the A7s on a gimbal is smooth
An Otus on the A7R is amazing

Neither are a Weapon 8K . . . but you can shoot with them today ;-)

exactly what ZEB said lol

boils down to: stills A7R video: A7sII

I dont know why people say rii for stills, sii for motion. I had The a7s and i have an a7rii and used a a7sii. I have got to say that The rii is much more versatile than The a7sii, and This is why:

Better Stills
Much better autofocus especially for use with gymbal
when in 4K you can shoot full frame and s35 (a7sii only FF)
The S35 mode has no pixel binning.

A7sii has slog3 and some kind of lut and better low light performance at a price, above 5000 iso color science falls apart.

I'm with you Filipe. R11 makes for a great B cam or when you need the small form factor. I don't find the log function very helpfull with either camera because of the iso limitatuins. I'm definately spoiled by r3d. I wish all these cameras had raw modes.

I'm loving the A7R2 - I use 4k APS mode when I need higher ISO or am using cine glass, And FF mode when you have FF lenses and need minimal skew. AF with native E lenses is pretty decent - you can trick/confuse it but it's good enough for a typical gimbal shot. One thing to keep in mind is that on the A7S2 there's no 4k APS.

Why choose? At $3K for a top tier camera . . . buy 'em both. One to use for its best application - one for back up . . . or both for Multicam work with a RED. They cut together fine

You guys know the trick to shoot s35 or an A7SII right? It's pretty simple:

I own the R but the S is much better for video. Let alone much better low light. The A7SII has better sharpness in video and slog3 gives you a bit more DR.

Like others say, R for stills, S for video. But you can get away with either unless your final (still) is going up on a billboard, then the R is the better choice.

Got myself the A7R2 mainly for BTS cam...

The 5 stops IS and the Insane ISO range will allow for much better still images in on Set situations where Flash is not an option and or in darker ambients and or exteriors at night... 4k Video is of course also great option for the BTS and or Reviews... Don't think I'll be going back to Canon any time soon... :)

Matt, that hack was brilliant. Maybe tipped the scales towards the "S". I really liked the 4K APS-C option on the "R" and the 42 MP stills. But not having gamma assist on the "R" was bothering me as well. Now I can have both.

Sony will "fix" this hack with the next firmware update ;-)

Forgot to mention 120 fps at 1080 with S2 apposed to 720 on the R2.

There is a lot of jazz about sony a7 series here. I just have to speak to my experience. Simply put, I got rid of my A7R2 and would rather use my 5DMK3 cause of a few what I consider to be significant problems.

First, how slow the processing is with stills. Any High speed shutter you do will bog down the camera, it literally needs a break in between shots, completely unacceptable in even a non-action photo shoot.

I don't think the Stills were any more incredible than the old MK3.

Sony glass mostly sucks, so you need an adapter which creates latency and incompatibilities with certain lenses.

S-log color science isn't really superb.

The low light on the R2 isn't near the ground breaking amount that the S2 is.

So since most of my gripes were about still use. I would say the A7S2 would get my vote between the R2 cause in my opinion the still capabilities of the R2 are worthless. With that being said, if you had a choice and were only in the $3k price range I would wait 2-3 months to see if the Canon 5DMK4 is ready, its not clear about what its new features are yet but there are rumors about shooting 4k and other solid additions.

Wait isn't this a Red forum?!

Better choice, scrape together another $4k and get a barebones Raven, if you can wait 8 months lol.

^you can fit any lens on a mirrorless body with an adapter. As in any lens. Combine that with an S35 mode . . . I shouldn't have sold those Angies so cheap ;-)

Yes it is a RED forum attended by smart people who can think outside a single brand and discuss all things industry related and interesting. Rigid, single subject forums would be like a single subject Parisian cafe discussion rule. Boring and not attended by compelling folks
