  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony 4K Study

Even if 2K is enough (and that would have to be a good 2K, not a pseudo-2K from the 5D MkII) the advantages of the EPIC are enormous. You can do IMAX quality in slow-motion; you can have a generous window for re-framing and stabilization; a 4K to 2K downsample is super-sharp; even if you're delivering a 2K project, it's much more compact than the 'other leading brand'; it's a DSMC; it's arguably the best digital camera of any type for underwater shooting. And so on.

Nobody here needs reminding. Other people might like to consider those things.

He he, it is always easier to lay down the last bricks of a house and say you built it, then actually design and build one from the very Foundation... Some people are like that, they prefer to steal other people's creativity and work, and with few round of words make it theirs, its easier that way... And we do have some people that like to do that, especially in our industry and not just the equipment side of it ;)

But no one is a full here, but I ma sure there are plenty of people out there that will accept them as the innovators of 4k, oh wait there is Canon and Arri too.. ;)

Which 4K projectors were the majority of RED 4K footage being showcased with?

Oh yea, mainly Sony.... Sony have been in this game from the beginning and clearly believed in 4K.

Jim Jannard has done alot for 4K acquisition... But don't begin to think he invented it or that RED are the only company that have been pushing 4K.

I always sit the farest away from the screen at cinema. The picture still looks painfully soft. 4k cinema will be a blessing.

Same here, Joel. For some strange reason, I've never sat anywhere else but near the back of the theater. Maybe I'll switch things up a bit;)

Were are taking 4k Digital only right, I think NASA had one of the First High RES imagers out there. Just saying.

That's a beautiful analogy, Ketch. It's definitely true. RED clearly led and will lead the way with its upcoming REDRAY and 4K distribution. My prediction: In less than two years, there will be affordable options to view 4K movies at home. Although SONY might seem like an competitor to RED in terms of image acquisition, we need companies like them in order to bring 4K televisions in people's living rooms. Until then, I would be more than happy to enjoy 4K projection at my local cinema.

I guess the Dalsa 4K camera was a figment of my imagination?

Look, RED deserve a huge place in the 4K acquisition history books and have really led the way over the last 5+ years... But there was a 4K digital camera before RED, there were 4K film scans before RED and there were 4K projectors before RED.

I'm a RED fan, i'm a 4K fan... I just don't like analogies that are misleading or people sniggering that Sony are trying to lay claim to 4K off RED's hard work..... They have been just as instrumental in getting where we are today and probably more so in the next few years.

+1..

For crying out loud, can we wait until 4K is ubiquitous and THEN decide who gets how much of the credit...

For now, anyone who believes in and promotes 4K is to be praised and supported. Go RED. Go Sony. Go Aaton. Go Canon. Go Pro? (hehe) I guess there are some limits ;-)

Cheers - #19

Is this even a new study? I remember reading a well put together study on 4k by Sony's projector division back when the F35 was still Sony's top end camera...Sony's projector division has been on their game for a long time.

Edit: Yeah, this looks like the same study...still a good study, but EOSHD is like three years late in reporting.

I think it's less EOSHD being 3 years late in report, it's just that Sony is 3 years late in pushing 4K as better because they had to wait until they had an end to end pipeline.

Which is nothing to be sneezed at, at the moment Sony is the only company with 4K projection and 4K acquisition... Although November 30th will hopefully let us know how much longer that will be the case for.

Red may not be the pioneers of 4K, as previously noted, (though may I ask have you seen the size of prototype Dalsa?), but they're absolutely the company, which delivered a practical, usable ~4K camera, that I can "wave in one hand if I wanted to". Also you have to give them props for being a small company kicking industry in the jewels, repeatedly, which is always a good thing, right? Who knows, the next Blackmagic camera may have off the shelf 4K sensor in it with HDR and global shutter, too.

I don't understand your point...I saw this three years ago because Sony was making a big deal about it (and I thought it was ironic because their camera department was still acting like 2k was enough).

Sony has to sell 4k projectors now...

I'm a low budget film DP that finishes all my films in 4k since 1 year (when shot on RED)
and I'm thankfull to RED that they created a tool that made 4k possible for me.

Strange that after 5 years, RED's R3D became a bless for the aquisition/post-production. Times changes!

Pat

but sony is kind of a pain man, constant new models, no upgrades. red ray is gonna kill sonys 4k prices, sony is a junk stock last time i heard..
