  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony 4K camera rumor

Well, I for one had the opportunity to work with the F35 last fall on a McDonald's / Avatar spot. I have to admit I was very impressed with resolution, dynamic range, rendering of skintones, layout/menus, 1080P output and of course boot up times. We were shooting in S-Log mode, viewing 1080 on a 24" Cinetal with random LUTs I created in Speedgrade on my MBP. So really not a fair comparison to my Red viewing on a BTLH2550 but that's what I know best.

As much as I love my Red, the F35 (despite $) was a step above in most every way. Although purely subjective, the inherent sharpness seemed to come across on screen immediately, while rendering very pleasing skintones. I didn't expect to be so impressed...especially after seeing films shot on the Genesis that often screamed video (please film DPs stay away from shooting 360degree shutter in digital). I digress...

Having said that, we recorded to an on board SRW-1 and Convergent Designs Nano Flash which was more confidence inspiring for me as I could check the files as we shot on my laptop (albeit in 8 bit).
Having said that, I have no question that the M-X and Epic will surpass what I experienced with the F35. Especially with future release build improvements, 1080P live out, more confidence inspiring monitoring and of course better low light sensitivity to name a few. I for one am probably holding off on the MX upgrade until Epic. Depending on the answer to the million dollar question...Delivery(?)

In the world of commercials at least, I don't think Red has as much to worry about from Sony as the industry buzz and rise in popularity from Canon 5Ds especially in the last 6 months.
My two cents FWIW

It's related to their CineAlta series. The Same camera used to shoot the Star Wars Prequels, Episodes 2 and 3 to be specific.

The original series was HD but sony did say that their next series will be capable of 4K digital video. I've read about it.
