SR-Memory-Card.jpg

Sony 1 Terabyte SR Memory Card: HD, 3D, 2K, 4K

"Imagine a solid state memory card about the size of a Hershey Bar,
with storage capacity up to 1 Terabyte, RAID 5 equivalent (very safe),
and guaranteed data transfer rate up to 5 Gbps for HD, 3D, 2K and 4K image files.
It cues up in cues up in 4 frames. That is fast: HDCAM SR tape’s data rate is 880 Mbps;
current SxS Memory Cards are rated at 800 Mbps. This is 5,000 Mbps (5 Gbps): more than 5 times faster.

And what’s so important about that? I think where there’s true 4K storage, a true 4K camera can’t be too far away.

A wise man once told me,

“no camera was ever developed before an established storage system was already in place.”

2x Acan dII

2x Acan dII

This is 5,000 Mbps (5 Gbps): more than 5 times faster.

Is that about twice the Acam dII memory module speed?

Is it "peak" speed or at all times?

Acam dII says "240MB per Second" so that is about 1920Mbps per second? Or more than 1/3 the Sony speed.

With overhead you divide 5000Mbps by maybe 10 to get 500MB/s data rate, so three of the Acam modules would be faster total recording rate if you write to them in rotation, and they seem like they will be on sale by summer.

In one of my other posts you can see the data rates for 4K delta-encoded recording, its 100% lossless, I have tested it on true RAW data. It should be possable to make a 4K uncompressed 24fps solid state camera with lossless recording before the end of 2010, if someone has a 4K sensor to hook to the new memory systems...

i am sure when i hand out jim a quadrillion dollars, he could make a cam wiyh an ovf, globalshutter, the david mullen button, the wireless charging powering, the make old fat girls look like giselle bündchen LUT and the flying anti gravity tripod head. i did forget about the the jarred security hologram wich tiers thieves apart.
would be cool. for now i take the 13.5 stops HDR camera called epic. but this is just my pov.

"True 4k" sounds line nasty talk Jim. Time to hit them over the head at NAB. "I see your announcement and I raise you "true 4k"... at 100 fps." :)

But this is good. It was about time Sony, at least leaked, that they would be getting in the 4k game.

This doesn't hurt RED though, they are here to stay. And don't forget the prices! Or will Sony try to sell a little cheaper than ARRI, and get a little closer to Red at least?

If anything this puts the pressure on ARRI to go 4k!

Well, Sony F35 is not "true 1080p" in my book as 1) measured resolution is less than 1920 across, 2) too much vertical aliasing, 3) RGB channels don't line up

I'm sure that when people see the price and lack of any practicality in the workflow, they'll all have a good laugh.

It's fun that RED now can pull the workflow argument.
2 years...

Compression... forgot about that elephant. Anything that may be useful in the Sony camp? Or is this behemoth file needs behemoth media... is that what we are seeing here?

Sony broadcast have a history of high priced "solutions". I tell the story of the local college which got some money for a HD camera, back in the HDCAM days, so they got the big nice Sony and lens etc. Never got enough money for the HDCAM deck though.....

5000 Mbps?
& Media Backbone???

LOL! The David Mullen-button :-D!

Even if they do come out with a 4K camera it will cost more than anything any of us could afford, I could probably buy a RED One, Epic and a Scarlet with a prime set for all and a complete lighting kit with a van and still have money left over to fund my film.

On wikipeda, they talk about creating a 4K Cinealta system, its from 2007.

Sony is a bit weird... they've been pushing 4K for years but had no 4K camera to go with their 4K projector, having to use 35mm footage (or Red footage) for demos, etc. So it only makes sense that they are thinking of a 4K camera finally, though odds are high that it may be quad-HD actually, 3840 x 2160.

The price of the camera will be through the roof, just look at the price of the F35. I bet I could buy a Scarlet kit for the price of one of these cards. The specs do seem out of this world but I'm sure there will be a price tag to match. Sony has not been known for offering bleeding edge tech at a low cost, at least not in the video production division.

Pretty much every major camera manufacturer has a 4K camera in the works now.

We can thank Jim for that.

Its funny, when all the other companies arrive at Red level, Red has already moved on. Sony, why not come out with a 6k camera to fit the price tag. No need to go the Sony route when in a couple of months, we can get 5K at a 1/4 of the price.

5000 Mbps?
& Media Backbone???
USB 3.0? That's what the speed tops out at for the new USB SuperSpeed standard. It might look like a bit number but it's really not when you break it down.

So I'm betting there will be a USB 3.0 adaptor for this puppy....

Actually, I really hope the Red Station runs off a USB 3.0 connection as well. It would be a fantastic way to pull down R3D footage off the new SSD media coming for epic/Scarlet.

Here today for PCs.... 2011+ for those of you waiting for Steve Jobs to bless the format ;)

HTH

The 3 chip LM design they have been trying to commercialise for years, based on older "long range downwards imaging" tech?

Paul, there is also LightPeak coming, which was created at the behest of Jobs. It's going to be an interesting fight.
