  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something to think about

I've tried to keep up with all the posts regarding storage, handing off video to clients, reliability, cover you ass etc...

Just remember, you can copy the entire contents of a Red drive to a 25 cent CD with room to spare. You don't even need DVD data discs. Formatting and burning a CD is much faster than doing the same with a 4 gig dvd data disc. Include a copy of the RedQuick plug in if needed.
Fast, reliable, safe. No worries.
I personally recommend Nero, since you can enable buffer overflow protection and data verification just for peace of mind. It will also burn to multiple CD/DVD burners simoultaneously if they are present.
I'm sure there are other good tools out there.

No need for multi thousand dollar capture disks and devices.

Let that sink in before you respond.

How exactly are you going to fit 320GB of data on a 700MB disc?

I think you're going to be shooting a lot more footage than what will fit on a CD. Red drive for example is 40-160GB (that's what it says on the website anyways... I'm guessing it will ship with 320GB since it's 2x160GB drives in RAID 0).

The proxy files still need the original/big media files. The proxy file will likely be in the format of a frameserving codec (my terminology), which is a little misdirection to get lower-resolution extractions from the original media files.

Or stated differently...
You can, on the fly, decode the 4K RAW files to various formats such as 2k, 1k, 0.5k.
Quicktime will read a file and only see a single codec/format at one time. For the original files, it can only see 4K RAW and will only decode to 4K... it doesn't allow for the file to be decoded to a lower resolution.
But if you generate the proxy, the proxy appears to be a file in a 2K/1K/0.5K format. So this misdirection gets around the problem.

(This is presumably what's happening.)

So the proxy files need the 4k files to preview? Okay I take it back. I thought you could copy those around.
In that case a cheap usb drive will do.
Sorry, get confused with all the options. Someone close or delete this thread.

Hehe. The Red team is good. But not THAT good. :D
