Something to make 2k Better at 60fps

[Domenic Barbero]

Random thought but would the instant hd plugin for magic bullet help the soft 2k footage at 60fps. It did do pretty incredible things for sd footage. and has helped a little on 7d 60fps. Anybody have any thoughts and/or theories. Im just bummed that 60fps is so soft. Wish it was just a touch more crisp.

Any idea why it would be softer than 24fps? Red does not do any in-camera sharpening. Have you tried to see how it sharpens up?

i havent tried yet, but what ive seen from people posting online, the 60fps stuff isnt the most attractive. Honestly the slo mo on the fs100 looks better after internet compression which kind of bums me out. I know there is no sharpening in camera, im really just basing it off what ive seen online so far.

scaled footage from 4K will always be sharper than shooting at 2K.

im aware that 4k is kick ass, but i wanna be able to get the most out of 60fps, because there is a noticeable difference in quality. I would like to be happy that my 15k camera can get better looking 60fps footage than a 4k camera. Is it possible to get 2k looking sharper via plugin, lenses, post anything?

If I`m not mistaken, magic bullet Instand HD is a scaling software, that probably use interpretative scaling algorithms that "remap" the original pixels to HD resolution. It will look better them a simple upscale, but not as good as simply recording HD. I think that if you could use this software in RED 2K footage, it would only work if you wanted to upscale the footage to a higher resolution, say 4K, not the other way around (downscaling for Vimeo resolution for instance). Again, not as good as just recording 4K, but maybe better them a simple upscale. Of course to do this, you would have to convert the original R3D file to RGB space. Also, I dont believe that magic bullet has this software updated to work with 2K masters and upscale to 4K.

I believe that one way to get a sharper 2K footage would be to expose for a lower ISO them 800, reducing noise floor, since at 2K the noise pattern will be bigger them at 4K (that will make your highlights blow out faster though). Also, you may want to try using last generation 16mm lenses (even better if stopped down a bit), or maybe Zeiss Digi primes (but I think you would need an adaptor). You can also try using micro 4/3 lenses, that are optimized for a little smaller image circle them S35 (I`ve heard panasonic micro 4/3 lenses are very sharp, but I have not tested them myself)

Maybe a good way around would be shoot at 3K 48FPS and use twixtor to get a higher frame rate... But I have not tested this myself since I dont have my Scarlet yet...

Yeah, I think the key is to keep ISO low (320) and your lens sharp (focused properly, f8, quality glass). Then some post sharpening and possibly noise reduction. I'm looking forward to testing this out when I get mine in a couple of weeks

The 48fps and then Twixtor'ing the result is good, still not ideal... But if you don't have the coin for a Phantom, (or Epic) you work with what you've got.

start with sharp lenses, finish with sharpening. simple solutions.

also, look into optical flow slo-mo and remember that while other cameras are applying sharpening before you get your image, red let's you choose how to process your images.
