  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

I need this ASAP. Have a 4 camera feature going right now. We have had several red raids go down recently even our first milled ones are no longer operational. Is there any real chance of these being avail this month?

The Nexto models with SSD do look good, I have not personally used one. I would be willing to trust the SSD more so than the mechanical hard drive, if I were only offloading to a single device. Still not ideal. But for the price and amount of storage, the only advantage here is the compact size. And even then... 128GB Nexto DI is $2500. 128GB REDMAG SSD is $1800, 32GB RED SSD is $3200. Hmmm..... How about I just buy a couple more RED SSDs and not screw with offloading at all? ...Actually that will be my approach with much of my field work. Epic kit that can fit in a backpack, lightweight tripod, enough batteries and media to get me through. When it's a crew of just me, or one other, or if I'm trying to keep up in the field with military personnel, etc.. Epic with 256GB SSDs is going to be a godsend. I've done a couple training and tactical videos for the US Military and there was two days of hell last january that almost killed me. RED One on my shoulder, battery and RED-RAM clipped to my belt, Optimo 16-42 or 30-80 on the camera, with the other lens and extra batts and RAMs in my backpack along with a macbook pro and compact SSD RAID. It was two days of hellish reminder just how badly out of shape I am these days. The only reason I could kinda keep up with a bunch of guys that were 10 to 15 years younger than me, and in great shape, is they were carrying more weight than I was most of the time.

I would have gladly traded those RED RAMs for a 500GB SSD-based Nexto and three 16GB CF's.

...HDD-based Nexto? No interest here.

I agree that once Redmag comes out that it would replace the need for these. However, if these supplied an ample amount of storage in SSD form I could defiantly see using these on certain jobs (while I am not with the military a Job that Jeff described would be ideal for these). Either way I'd prefer a Red based product but the SSD is interesting.

I'm a little late to the party so forgive me if this question has been broached, but wouldn't it be pretty easy to replace the laptop drives in the Red Drive with SSD Drives? I've got two SSD's in my Mac Pro as a Raid 0 and get 500mb/sec. Wicked fast!

Something else to keep in mind is the GigE port. Will we be able to offload through GigE? I seem to remember the answer being yes.

If there was a simple app for the PC and OSX which would detect when the camera was idle and start transferring an extra copy you might be able to offload and verify all media in between takes automatically.

Add me to the list of people who's very interesting in picking one of these
up this month. I can pick up in Lake Forest or Hollywood ;-)

A question about those SSD & future Red firmware.
Is there any way we could record different formats on the same media ?

With 256gb SSD for instance, we have the opportunity for run and gun for hours, and even if I plan to shoot 5K most time, i know i'll do some 4K/3K to get longer focals. That would be pretty convenient if Red could improve the way camera handle file system and allow such operations.

Yannick, you can already switch between resolutions on a single media. You just can't switch your time base.

Good to know... Since the beginning ?
On a set in august, they were switching media along with resolution change. But i guess it was just a way to organize dailies then.

sometime late next month if everything goes well.. which usually never happens :)

Thanks for the update Jarred...

Does this apply to the 1.8" ssd modules for Red One?

This question may already have been covered, if so apologies in advance:

I have been planning a rather complex shoot that requires very long recording times - the kind of length that REDDRIVES would provide - with the minimum number of breaks to change media, around 8-10 hours constant recording.

What is the maximum recording time the SSD will allow. Are we going to see 320GB RED SSD's any time soon?

Using SSD's how long is a media change likely to take from pressing REC stop, change media to Rec start? Can one format the RED SSD's off camera?

And (here goes!) is it possible to hook up an external raid instead of the smaller SSD's using the on-camera storage interface?

you will be able to record about 110 minutes of 4k 2:1 RC36 onto a 256GB SSD card.

Dont recommend formatting mags off camera, but you can format them on camera before your shoot, so you take a few mags, format them 1 by 1 in camera beforehand then label them in the order you formatted them.

It takes about 10 seconds to unmount insert and mount a new card.

Jarred, can you tell us this also for the RED Scarlet Fixed ? Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply Jarred.

I look forward to seeing SSD's in action!

SSD modules

SSD modules

sometime late next month if everything goes well.. which usually never happens :)

Thanks, was trying to wait patiently to hear something....hate to keep bugging you guys, the more we bug you the less you can get completed.

Best,
Frazier

The SSD Modules are very much needed. Thanks for the update.

So Jarred -for some of us this will be like an early Xmas present?...Hmm. When can we pre-order?

And thanks on the 4K 2:1 estimates...What about 4.5K at RC 42?

<kitchen table rant>
is it really absolutely necessary to go SLC? The idea that SLC is faster is two years old- there are MLCs out that have surpassed SLCs in speed. Reliability is only a problem for server intense applications with A LOT of write cycles - a RED SSD will not have many write cycles - like 1000 a year if you really fill it every day multiple times. - thats still lasting ten years then at least - I doubt that in ten years anybody still using their "old" SSDs.
From all recent articles I read - MLC is where its at for the future - all research goes into that - all new SSD factories are producing MLC drives - which means prices are gonna drop even further very soon.
If you would give me an option for MLC 256GB below $800 and SLC $3200 Id go MLC without even thinking about it twice. I mean come on just a month ago CompactFlash cards (thats MLC at its worse - 10 year old interface etc pp) where enough too for everybody - not even to talk about harddrives and don´t get me started about film stock, or tapes. Now all of the sudden a 10 year lasting drive with no mechanics and no magnetics involved is not enough?

Please Red , hurry with bringing ssd media to us...

We need it for a shoot half november... This is holding me from ordering 1 more system , because I think cf is dated by now...and don't want to spend tons of money on something I won''t use anymore in the future.

so please hurry, or give us a Certain day that's 100% for sure and tell us if it's going to be available in mass..
