  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

A 256GB SSD can do ~2.5 hours on a Red One.

And Deanan,if you can say,on Scarlet it could potentially be many hours? ( i do hope so ,i have a specific need for real long takes, the longer the better)

any Idea availability dates, we have a dozen that we would love to upgrade to solid state for all the obvious reasons...

thanks guys, the options that you come up with keep making this system better and better...and think were sill not even close to what a codex recorder would cost!

come to think about it with what we save ill take a few more bodies, thank you!!

3.5+ hours of 3k.

With rollover from one SSD to another, double that.

A thought I had while staring at some P2 cameras recently...

It would be a good idea to sell these SSDs with a plastic case for transport. Pelican makes a multi-CF case but for these SSDs I think something custom from the manufacturer might be a good idea.

As time has gone by since I first read this post, I'm starting to warm up to the idea of the solid state media. Mostly because my brother's concert is approaching and I'm getting more and more nervous thinking the Red Drive might glitch up from the vibrations. I haven't warmed up to the price of the solid state media though - it's not really that they are too expensive, it's more a frustration that there's absolutely no way I can afford them.

Looking forward to when the SSDs are available. October is a great month this year... I hope.

Meaning: You can have 2 SSD's installed on the Scarlet/Epic?
Side magazine woudl be number one, rear module would be number two (or three, four etc assuming you can stack them ad infinitum!).

Is there any way to hear on shipping/availability? Given that 'October' starts at the end of this week and if the SSD's are ready to go out in the coming weeks, it should be clear if they will be ready or not. I certainly do not want to purchase cards right now.

I know that this topic is somewhat taboo but given the bomb evf slight set-back, I personally would appreciate any foresight as to when SSD will be ready.

Is this something that the FCC could delay? Also, will they be shipping in large quantities? Please, any info will help.

Thank You for any clarification afforded to us,

I'm glad to see this serious shift to SSD. SSD is where it's at.

Any updates on availability? I'm sure if there were they'd be posted but ready when you are :)

SSD Drives READY TO BUY....

SSD Drives READY TO BUY....

We need this very badly, any update would be greatly appreciated....was a tough weekend that just ended, just not enough storage for what we shot. Need the SSD drives asap. Ready to buy.

Can we at least put deposits on them down asap for RED One?

Thanks,
Frazier Nivens

Not that this is in any way a replacement for SSDs, but a Nexto, and 2 cards is also a combo that can work - you have say 500 Gigs on the Nexto - you just pop in cards, and they read faster than video real-time - so a 16 GIG card takes about 7 minutes to transfer - rinse and repeat.

Thanks for the suggestion...

This looks great for the surface, but we were also working underwater and the SSD drives will be great when we can order them. The SSD Drives are badly needed....any update on when we can buy the module and drives would be greatly appreciated by all....thanking you in advance for any idea of when this might be available.

I've never had good luck with Nexto units. They're not that fast (I've never seen one faster than real-time - 66MB/s peak according to spec) and are no more reliable than the 2.5" HDD inside of them. If you're trying to make redundant copies for reliability, you will need two Nextos and you will double your offload time. I personally have never bought one for this reason, but have been involved with shoots that have used them. IMO, they're more hassle than they're worth.

Waiting wondering...but we need some media options other that 16 GB CF cards....

Don't want to rent drives...but will if I have to I guess. And on a music video shoot if the music is too loud then we get drop frames...

Solid State all the way please...

Anxiosly waiting for the availability as well. meanwhile I´m very happy with the NextoDI.
They are cheap (about 300 EUR/400 USD) and they never let me down so far. the nexto reads a full 16GB Card in about 7min including file verification. Since they power off automatically after copying and will give you a message if the last copy was sucessfull, you don´t have to pay a lot of attention to the units.
I always use one unit as backup together with my MacPro or Macbook where i copy to another disk.
In seldom cases, where there is limited budget i use up to 4 nextos to shuttle between post house and set without a Data Wrangler and never had any problem for over 2 years now.

Have you used any of the "Pro" models or this one with an SSD:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/635399-REG/Nexto_DI_NVS25128SD_Nexto_Video_Pro_Storage.html

Sort of pricey for what it is but I've thought about it for certain circumstances where it's very remote and power is a necessity.

The Nexto models with SSD do look good, I have not personally used one. I would be willing to trust the SSD more so than the mechanical hard drive, if I were only offloading to a single device. Still not ideal. But for the price and amount of storage, the only advantage here is the compact size. And even then... 128GB Nexto DI is $2500. 128GB REDMAG SSD is $1800, 32GB RED SSD is $3200. Hmmm..... How about I just buy a couple more RED SSDs and not screw with offloading at all? ...Actually that will be my approach with much of my field work. Epic kit that can fit in a backpack, lightweight tripod, enough batteries and media to get me through. When it's a crew of just me, or one other, or if I'm trying to keep up in the field with military personnel, etc.. Epic with 256GB SSDs is going to be a godsend. I've done a couple training and tactical videos for the US Military and there was two days of hell last january that almost killed me. RED One on my shoulder, battery and RED-RAM clipped to my belt, Optimo 16-42 or 30-80 on the camera, with the other lens and extra batts and RAMs in my backpack along with a macbook pro and compact SSD RAID. It was two days of hellish reminder just how badly out of shape I am these days. The only reason I could kinda keep up with a bunch of guys that were 10 to 15 years younger than me, and in great shape, is they were carrying more weight than I was most of the time.

I would have gladly traded those RED RAMs for a 500GB SSD-based Nexto and three 16GB CF's.

...HDD-based Nexto? No interest here.
