  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

No way SJ. Not in the Red One. There would be additional processing required, and I don't think RED is about to start offering the possibility to only record ProRes.
I would bet they have always and will always look at ProRes as a second file.

I just have got a "crazy" idea that new 1.8" SSD slot maybe would add and enable shooting 1080p Apple ProRes 422/4444 on R1-MX of course that would be also connected with new firmware.

IBC 2010 announcement???!!!

Shock in competitor's A headquarters.???!!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, that would be special and well worth the upgrade price!!!

What do I do with my 16GB cards?

What do I do with my 16GB cards?

So what am i going to do with my 16GB cards - what happens if I want both SSD and compact Flash?

Is there a Lemo to SSD do I can mount like a Red Drive?

For RED ONE owners.

I think you have to pick your poison here. CF, although amazing for what RED was able to squeeze out of it has been a bit of a hindrance. Capacity was just never there. And limitations, especially with 8GB cards. Although there is a hit to move up to SSD, I think in the end, it's the right move for RED. I'm glad it is a module that becomes part of the camera. I can't hang any more stuff off the R1. It's too much. I like the idea of streamlining it. 256GB of storage with minimal impact on camera form factor, that's a good thing. It does mean saying goodbye to CF for the most part. Like swapping lens mounts, you're not going to want to do it too often I would think.

Wasn't there a picture of a dual CF Card module posted a while back?

SSD Drive module on the side of your cam, then the dual CF Card module added to the rear (or wherever you want to put it) on your camera... You get the best of both worlds...

Sell them to scarlet users , hopefully scarlet still allows cf cards. hopefully the media prices will go down given 256GB SSD costs $600 retail and reads 250MB and writes almost 200MB once red recoup their costs for designing the new housing

Speaking on behalf of the lower end, future Scarlet owners, I hope this means that the CF Cards will get a price drop soon.

The 16 GB cards are 300 today, maybe we'll get 32 GB Cards at that price soon, or even 64 GB. Would be great.

I suppose, but my question to this would be: why?

If you have an SSD module on your brain unit, why would you add the weight and length of a dual CF module to the back? The attached SSD will already greatly surpass the CF's recording options and capacity. Seems like a waste of space to me. Use your CFs in your Scarlet.

That is awesome news Jarred and RED team! Very well done! SSD is defiently the way to go. Is the pricing any different for Scarlet? I think a lot of people are scared of spending as much if not more on media, then on the camera itself. Any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Epic is much more complicated of a module... it has a monitor board+port, plus user buttons and a record button.

Ummmmm... this might be a really stupid question but:

I was planning on buying the $500 CF Card side module.

Sooooo...... evidently all these buttons and goodies add $1k.... how can you sell a CF-Module for $500 that has all these things but then need to add an additional $1000 for them on the SSD module?

Does that mean the CF Card side module is going up by another $1k as well?

...So capacity for capacity, it IS cheaper than 16GB CF Cards... and that does NOT include the $ saved on the DIT's reduced overtime.

These are really good points, especially with regard to the DIT's offload time. The 16GB CF cards cost $18.75/GB while these SSDs run $12.50-$14.84/GB.

My 2¢

My 2¢

IIRC there is a 2.5 drive bay offered in a Red Station module that would allow you to put in bare drives and copy media to them in the field. This would seem the easiest and cheapest way to do field back ups - just make sure you have proper cases for the bare drives to travel in!

The pricing may seem a bit steep but if you have ever written a check for a $125,000 HDCAM-SR studio deck, $50K plus for an SRW-1 HDCAM-SR field recorder, etc it seems darn reasonable.

I agree with the sentiment that the 1.8" SSD based system would be the obvious choice for the Epic and that CF would be the budget minded choice for Scarlet. Seems logical to me.

Cheers - #19

I think some are forgetting that the Epic will be the best digital cinema camera available at any price range. So in my opinion, while some may think the SSD module/media may be expensive just remember that you are using the VERY top of the line digital cinema camera money can buy and unlike film you get to reuse your recording media.

So just remember that with a 28,000 dollar price tag nothing even comes close to it. So to think that recording solutions might cost 10 grand isn't much considering what else is available (hell the Alexa costs twice as much even with added cost of SSD module/media included) With Red we get accustomed to low prices but compare the costs to Pro offerings from other brands like Panasonic, Arri etc. and it becomes easily apparent that Red provides an excellent deal. Also, Red has always been extremely fair with their pricing. While if you compare the pricing to off the shelf SSD it might seem a little high but add in the R&D, added performance and additional costs and their pricing structure seems fair.

Not to mention that once Scarlet comes out I think used Red CF cards will be a commodity and anyone who switched over to SSD will be easily able to recoup a good portion of their investment. Sorry for the rant, it just seems every time that Red announces something a lot of negativity comes along with it; so this is just my take on this. Anyways, thanks Red team for keeping us informed and continuing to always provide us with new and exciting technology.

Blair, unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the Red Station. Is there a battery (via V-mount for instance) attached that makes convenient backup in the field possible? Currently I'm using Nextos for my CFs and love them. I don't want to carry a laptop around if I can avoid it.

Thanks,

Hans

I think everything is falling into place quite nicely. +1 to what Blair and Brian have said above.

Even if the SSD module were free and the SSD mags were $2/GB, people would still complain about something.

No one is talking about value. No one is questioning quality.

We all know that specs and delivery dates are subject to change, and we count on it..
This is a two pronged event:
1: The REMOVAL of the RED Drive from the picture
2: The increase in cost to move to SSDs

Guys, we need to be able to express some thought and emotion on here without being berated, insulted, or have our various business models questioned.

It's a GREAT Product, but it's a lot more than I thought it was going to be, and it caught me (And others it would seem) Flat-footed.

I would be grateful for a little understanding and respect vs the lecturing.

The Chevy Volt might be a great value, and will save you a ton of gas, and even has a WHOPPING tax credit, but it's still out of range for a lot of people.

That does not make the car bad, or the people stupid. It's just the way of things.

I have already dropped some things from my Epic purchase so that I can get the SSDs.. I'll live, and I'll make it work.. I always do.. But it still hurt like the dickens!

Jay

I don't get it why some people are talking Epic on this tread that is about R1-MX has got SSD 1.8" slot.

What does it mean???

One more new improvement of R1 modular design and possible new recording option...????

I tried to get one of possible answers but lost in the noise that is just pretty high here.

Jay, Matthew,
I agree with what you're saying.

WHy are people bitching about price? When the performance gains alone should pay for the upgrade (less hours for DIT to be offloading) do the math.

16GB vs SSD MATH
64GB SSD $950. = (4 x 16GB @ $300 = $1200) SAVINGS of $250
128GB SSD $1800 = (8x 16GB @ $300 = $2400 = SAVINGS of $600
256GB SSD $3200 = (16x 16GB @ $300 = $4800 = SAVINGS of $1600

So capacity for capacity, it IS cheaper than 16GB CF Cards... and that does NOT include the $ saved on the DIT's reduced overtime.

Tim, no one is 'bitching' about price. This is a forum where Red invites feedback. It's legitimate feedback to go 'whoa, this is going to hurt'. The costs you have outlined are not bad at all. The thing that hurts is the fact that it'll cost you $2000 to get the point where you can even begint to buy the media ($1500 Red One SSD Module + $500 Red proprietary SSD downloading).
