  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There is a company out there called DraganFly that makes these remote control helicopters that can be attached to all kind of diffrent cameras, they are packed with all kind of features, problem is, it can only lift light cameras. I am sure if red has made great cams someome in the red company could come up with something better then these guys so we can mount out red cams so we can get areal shots.

This is a picture of there lastest model:

Technical Specs of the helicopter:

I know you are all wondering, what is it crashes? My red will break no way!this is why it is so good the possibilities are endless, these guys managed to make sencors that that self stabalize the helicopter up in the air for steady footage, even self landing, so you don't have to worrie about crashing when you are about to land because it lands itself, it even has GPS in it.

I am sure this will even push the red camara to new heights if red can come up with something better that can lift a bigger camara like the red and all its extras. This new model of helicopter is not for sale yet, but they have other models with crappy micro cameras BUT the helicopter features are great!.

Ideas for the red version:

(a)Sencors that detect when you're power is about to run out, and it lands itself so you don't have to be worried about looking at ur clock to see how much time in power you have and beeing worried about crashing in mid air because of something so simple like runing out of power.

(b)Crash Housing system for the camera, so in the event if it does crash at a high altitude, you're red will be completly unharmed.

(c)Rotors more far apart, i have seen some footage in youtube of this and its great, but some shots if you move the cameras up in the air you can see part of the rotors in frame.

(d) remote controled focus, zoom basiclly do all the basic things the red can do but in a remote control up in the air when you can't be touching the red to focus out or in, because of altitude.

(e) Bigger Payload (Able to left more weight) so you can at least take the red up in the air attached to a nice lense to it at least.

Another idea is to have a longer flight time, the power in the helicopter these guys made it allows you about 10 to 15 minute flight times. Maybe red can come up with a more powerfull compact battery in there own version that allows you longer flight times.
Since this new model is new and not out for sale yet, i am not sure how much it will cost, but the older models range from $1,000 to $3,000.

I have seen other companys trying to make the same thing with there own model helicopters such as a dutch company called actionfly http://www.actionfly.de but it looks like something that is out of the price range for an independent film maker, wich was the whole concept to red when it started back in dvxuser to make great things possible for people who don't have millions of dollars to spend for a film.

Well i have not been around here in a long time and i had to make a new account because i forgot all the info that has to do with my old account on here. Anyways i see there is new model cams that are coming out in the future sometime, looks great! As soon as they come out i will be buying one of those beast to. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! And please strongly consider my idea and make something like what these guys did, but something that will work for the red!. Think REDFLY! oh baby i could taste it and see the red heli already!

PS if anyone has more ideas, feel free to share I am sure with all our input if red decides to go with this isea, they can make something great.

I priced the draganFly X6 highDef package and the price they gave me was $24,280.00

This is why red company can make something better! And in the price range for users here!.

I'm afraid that economies of scale don't directly translate from one industry to another. The Draganfly guys are selling these semi-autonomous helicopters at a bargain price to begin with. It would take a much larger and more powerful system to be able to lift a RED One in this manner, more conventional RC helicopter designs are far more practical at this time and cheaper too. Heli shots are typically not something someone does every day... For most of us, it's more practical to hire the heli crew on an as-needed basis. Then again, if I had the cash and I could get a Draganfly that would fly my RED One, I'd probably buy it. :)

Most parts are made in china (chips, sencors ect), and i can see from research the cost to make a draganfly is much less for what they really go for when they are up for sale, this is why i am so sure red can come up with something better and under 10k. Most thing that took money for them is the research to make it happen, but since this is already done, red can just pick up from there and make a beter version of it.

I am always amazed how little respect people have for others intellectual property.

you have no clue what i meant, i did not mean it by disrespect towards them at all, even tho what i said its true, i am only trying to get red to make sometbhing better that works for the red, because there helicopters cannot lift the weight of the red. The purpose to this thread is to make something like they have but that works for the red.I am looking for input and ideas so maybe they can consider doing somethng like this in the near future. If someome has anymore negative comments to say about my idea then keep it to you're self, all i am looking for is input. If red does not consider my idea i am possibly looking to make and sell something like it for the red. thanks.

crew, camara packages they offier, permits to fly and film in the skys, ammount of time you will be filming for, ect, ect

cheap?

Not at all. Why spend over 10 k for all that, if you can spend under 6 k in you're own helicopter and you get to keep it forever, imagen this:

Lets say as an exmaple it will cost 12,000 for a regular shoot in a regular big sized helicopter. Ok you have spend 13k in expenses for one arial shoot for one feature film, then in the future you decide to make another film involving arial footage, another 12k out ur pocket, again and again for each feature, it pays for itself to have a mini helicopter that can do the same job for half of the cost.

"(e) Bigger Payload "

The website said up to "500 grams." That's not going to lift a Scarlet.

I wasn't that impressed with the stability either. Maybe in zero wind, with a gentle moving forward shot it would be acceptable for cinema. Mostly it bobbed around too much for my taste.

Seems like the main purpose (and intended market) is surveillance and police-state type unmanned drone activity. Charming.

I agree and i thank you for you're input, the satbility has improved a lot since there older models of helicopters they have, but it can be tweaked even more, it has to do with the mount, i am working on a design for it and soon i will be posting pictures, i am also going to go ahead and work on a prototype on something that can lift the red, be more stable... SO PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS AND MORE FEEDBACK GUYS. thanks

Have you ever actually flown RC aircraft? Your first step should be learning to fly fixed wing, and then rotary wing air craft.

I fly RC fixed wing and helicopters. While the fixed wing aircraft lose power, you can generally glide them down. When the choppers lose power, everything comes down and cracks like an egg!

Even the fancier ones with autorotation features mostly crash when power out.

Nope, my RED does not go up in a Radio Model. Last bad crash I saw was from someone mistakenly turning on another transmitter and interfering with the signal. BANG!

Eduardo,

Perhaps you should go build what you want yourself? You seem to be thinking this is all a trivial matter and that someone (RED in particular) can just take an existing concept and put it to use. Fine and dandy if they can, but I don't see this happening anytime soon, or ever. I think it's going to take a third party to get such an initiative off the ground. The Draganfly folks would probably be willing to build larger craft for a camera like Scarlet, if there is enough demand. Prices will drop if the demand is there.

And just because they have put all the money in to develop these craft, doesn't mean that the R&D is done for everyone else. A company like RED can't simply pick up the design and run with it, no doubt violating multiple patents and trademarks in the process.

As for flying RC aircraft... I used to fly fixed wing RC craft as a hobby. But I eventually gave up as it was getting too expensive and time consuming. Especially since I was rather good at crashing them. A couple friends in the group I would fly with also had helicopters. I got to try one out a couple times, with their help, but I never really learned how.

Yes I am trying to buil one myself, getting there little by litlle, i have flown RC aircraft for years but with all the technology out here these days crashing you're aircraft is a thing of the past, i have gotten in touch with some folks from the tv show robotwars and they are willing to help me out on this. My first tought was to let red know about this so maybe they can run with something like they have (the folks at darganfly), not meaning to say i want the exact replica ofcourse there is trademark and patents that would be violated. I am just saying runing with the concept of having an RC aircraft that can lift the red one and its future cameras.

It is indeed sad to crash an aircraft you like you much, but now with MEMS (Micro-Electric-Mechanical-Systems), Power Sensors (wich detect when power is going low in you're Helicopter it self lands before crashing in mid air), Magnetometers (Magnetoresistive Sensors), GPS systems (used for position hold, location, velocity data) and Barometric Sensors. The crashes are completly eliminated.

There is also sensors developed by Draganfly that i am looking to put as a feature in my own helicopter version that detect when you're remote control has stop comunicating with the helicopter because of something blocking communication, the helicopter also self lands before crashing in mid air.

Flight Simulators.... just like when i got my older version of draganfly.... every aircraft with a new design takes a new technique to fly it so the folks of draganfly invented a flight simulator that teaches you how to fly in a windows based PC.
