  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something I wished existed: remote mount for the side handle.

People were requesting a cable for the side handle here on Reduser a couple of years ago.
Jarred you could have sold a thousand...
I always presumed Red hasn't gone there in case a damaged cable fries a board on the brain. ( same with a cable for the Redmote).

Personally, I'd love to see a rosette solution, so that it the side handle can be mounted on a dogbone, or an arm with an Arri rosette.

I like the loupe for the 5.0, too.

Nicholas,
I am so glad to see your Grid Handle Extension! I am also glad to see Jarred’s enthusiasm for it.
A lot of my work is shooting documentaries often intimate with minimal crews and no CA. I have always thought the Scarlet could be the perfect documentary camera but have always found the handheld options do not work for me. I come from the 16 mm tradition using the Aaton, Arri SR, Éclair etc and latter the ENG rigs, where the heal of the palm of the right and took the weight of the camera via the grip, leaving the fingers of the right hand free to roll the camera and in the case of ENG rigs to zoom. The left hand is then free to pull focus and stop, and do a 101 other things while shooting.
In light of the above, I am wondering if you have tried to mount the handle horizontally, say directly on the matte box bar to use it in this way. If this is possible how might the fingers of the right hand sit in relation to the various buttons and dials?
The other advantage of this configuration is the ability to move the camera further back (moving the viewfinder forward and the vlock batteries backwards) to get a very well balanced camera where the weight is taken on the shoulder and not on the arms in front of the camera operator. Having the the rig balanced on the shoulder in this way and not hanging in front of the operator where the slightest movement is amplified through the optical leverage, I find leads not only to much more stable and flexible operation, but is much more compact, less intrusive and much easier to move with.
So, I would be very curious to hear from you how practical and ergonomic it might be to do this. If this works, I would be good to see photos and perhaps a video. A shorter cable to take it down to the front bars with an extension to use as you do in your clip would also be good.
Thanks,
Edwin Wes

Lucky recent owner of a battle tested Scarlet, though still waiting for the details of my order to be sorted.

Nicholas,

This looks great. Thanks for the hard work in developing it.

I also posted an idea back in March that I'd love to also see developed. IT basically is doing what you did there to tap the Side Handle port, but instead of connecting the Side Handle, you would have a very small box with just the joystick/wheel on it:

This would be very handy for mounting anywhere and having convenient hard wire control without needing a REDmote or Side Handle. Could even be mounted right next to the handgrip of a handheld config...

This is genius Nicholas... good job. Love this.

When you are ready, our engineers can sniff it out and certify it for you to make sure it doesn't pose any problems down the road.
thank you so much Jarred!
we'll be ready about next week!
i'll make sure you receive one of these...
thank you!

Get it certified by RED first Nicholas, and I'm sure you'll have far more sales!

We have one in our lab too. its all about price at this point. Its got 48 solder joints... not a quick build, but yes a rather simple invention. Write to me at jason@CinemaOxide.com if there's interest in a group buy scenario.

Basically it would be a simple grip relocator, but with RED it's not that simple. I say just buy a REDmote. More versatile in every way than a side handle, except you can't power the camera with a REDmote. But if you're on the shoulder chances are you have a brick solution anyway.
