  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something I noticed

Neat Video is the what many of us use :) Inexpensive and makes shots usable all the way up to 12800. I tend to shoot in the 320-800 world. Anything past that and Neat Video is what I use.
I use it too. For the price it's amazing but i'd rather shoot clean footage I dont really like what Neat Video does to minor details even when used correctly.

We did an extreme punch-in on some 35mm footage for large in-store displays. By extreme, I mean turning 10% of the image into the entire screen. Client noticed noise, we recommended Neat Video, everyone's happy.

With the Red, I tend to shoot 800, then rate down to 320 to control noise in RedCine, checking highlight texture as I move down in increments. Then bring the FLUT to .6 or .8, checking again for noise, and bam, sexy sexy.

The Scarlet is definitely noisier than the dozen or so Red One and Epic-M bodies I've used, no question. I've been told by an AC with an IMMENSE amount of technical knowledge that there is a slight color shift as you change ISOs on the Red One. Curious if anyone has seen / tested this? Same is of course true of all film, and I don't see it changing ISO in redcine, but if you were to record the scene once at 320 and again at 800, would color reproduction match exactly?

Time to do some tests...

I have to say I do love how much wisdom is shared on Reduser. Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing Ryan. We did a shoot this weekend and I know my DP Alex Baev pretty much always likes to shoot at 320 (on Red One Mx)

Thanks Nick, I've noticed I'm not the only Contax Zeiss apologist in Brooklyn...

I think a lot of folks like to rate the camera at 320 because it's cleaner and they know to keep a sharp eye for highlights. There's also something cool about saying "well actually it's a 320 camera," especially when you've been shooting film for decades and you want everyone to know how reluctant you are to shoot on this damn new camera

Man this thread takes us right back to 2008 doesn't it. I will post those color shift tests as soon as I get around to them. Also noise characteristics. A guy yesterday goes--"wait, you can rate it down from 1280, but the noise is recorded right?" I told him no, it's all metadata, but I want to see it with my eyes.

Hi Ryan,

Can you elaborate on this at all? I ordered an Epic (not yet delivered) after years/months of presuming I would only ever buy Scarlet, so I don't have a personal stake in the question, but I'm just curious. My understanding is that Scarlet and Epic would produce identical images at 24 fps because the sensors are identical and only the rapidity with which they can be read and reset separates them, making the higher frame rates possible on Epic. What would account for more noise in Scarlet, and is this something that other users have experienced as well?

Based on some tests intial tests I did with both camera I also feel that the scarlet in noticeably noisier. To be fair the test were not done to evaluate noise levels on the scarlet, but I did notice the noise difference. Some more tests and I'll be able to know for sure. I'm also sure someone from RED can shed some light on the subject as I also thought that Scarlet and Epic would match footage perfectly.

Haha. Yes. Apologist is a good word for it. "Get on my soap box" is another. Sigh. I am only three lenses short of my complete, three cam set however. Of that, I am quite proud. I'll probably have the most complete (read, insane) Contax Zeiss set on Reduser. Yeah?

The Foundry's FurnaceCore together with Neat Video is one of the best de-noiser combo software I found.

Maybe even beyond Reduser! I'm gonna start my collection soon... I'm loving the images :)

Haha. I own 20 of them. I'll have 25 of them by the time I'm done. We shot with Super Speeds this weekend, and WOW. Those were AMAZING. Everything I love about Contax...but on crack.

PS the 35 1.4 is the one to get, hands down. We use it all the time. On a 5D, it becomes a 21 1.4. HAHA.

And the 85 1.4 is riconkulous. Makes women's skin look magical.
