Someone please explain how this is possible...

Apparently Sony has built a prototype camera that can do single lens 3D.
I really don't understand how this works so please enlighten me, I though you needed interocular
distance to get 3D how do you get a stereo image with one lens, even if you do split the image circle in half?

Development of 240fps Single Lens 3D Camera

The camera which has capabilities of 240fps (frames per second) high frame-rate (HFR) and 3D with HD resolution, so called “HFR 3D Camera”, has been developed.

HFR 3D Camera has advantages as follows:

1) comfortable 3D image by no vergence-accommodation conflict and with highest quality of motion image using 240fps high frame-rate in each left and right image,

2) simple and accurate control on zoom / focus of single lens,

3) with no polarized glasses, normal 2D image can be seen. The 3D images shot by HFR 3D Camera will be demonstrated with 240fps 4k SXRD projectors which has been also developed for technical study."

Normal 2d images can be seen blurry or out of focus without glasses.

May be so. But you are still limited to an inter-ocular distance less than the diameter of the front element.

correct, which is why the system we created is much better.....we are not restricted in the IO in our design. Unfortunately I cannot elaborate too much due to NDA.

Once the imediate projects are over with I hope to go back to developing the prototypes with JR again. We have some rather interesting designs to test out.
