Hi! I am new in cinematography(second year of study) and even newer in RED. Guess what: I'd like to buy one and i have some problems :D
so i like to concider myself a young cinematographer and I want to buy a new camera(cuz my old sony dsrpd 170 is kind of crappy now ) and i like the idea of interchangeble stuff. I visited the RED website and i found the scarlet/epic possibilities. My problem is i canot find enogh details in there. Here are some questions maybe someone can help me.

1) I'd like to start from a minimal kit. I saw the scarlet 2/3'' 8xzoom. Says that it is a kit. Wha't in it? What else do i need to practicly shoot.
Also sais price - 3750$ fall 2009. Is it available?
2) How and where do i buy it from? No order saw on website. Maybe you can help me find it.

This is for start. Thx for now. Whyle an answer comes i'' look arounf for more topics with simmilar questions.

Hm...i started to understand around here... so nothing on the market yet, noone knows for sure what the kit contains, the price is still in proccess. Guess i'll have to reinvent my burning sensor from PD170 till the new year. As about getting these to Romania.. it will be hard.
If any new information comes aroundi apreciate it. Thx :)

exactly, tons of rumor and speculation around here, but no solid info yet.

Also, if you are studying, consider this route: get yourself a good stills camera and practice with the manual settings, then start framing exercises, exposure exercises, and finally different lighting set-ups.

Once you feel confident about that, there will be much more information about the Scarlet and Epic about. And you will know much better what sort of camera you need, which features are important to you.

thx for the info. i am mainly based on documentaries.. social life and so on... it's what i found in handy around this crap place i leave in. But i need a change. i need something new, with more possibilityes. Heared that red is great at these options.

I agree with Martin. I also shot MiniDV before moving to RED and there's something of a learning curve to get a handle on the exposure aids and RAW tools. The best practice you can get is to start shooting RAW with a dSLR. You'd be using the same kind of glass, understand focal length and controlling depth of field, and also be getting experience working with the RAW files.

i see the point :D I have the advantage i learn this at school. I use canon as photo. I have a 40D with both 70-200 f2.8 and 17-40 f4. As about shooting in school there is the 35mm black/white we exercise on. Next year we have color. Kodak vision on a MovieCam. So to PL i am used. The problem is how can i buy this red camera to get the business at a higher level As far as i understood, the only red cam i can buy is Red One, cam that i cannot afford yet.. :(
as about lens. I have a friend with Zeiss Pls and lights, I usually rent.
I need to get into the digital era too. More speed, sometimes more proffit :)

At this point in your career it might be financially more viable to rent a RED rather than buying one. I would definitely advise against taking up a loan to finance the camera.

Most clients will hire you because of your track record and expertise, the times of getting hired solely because you own a RED are long over.

And btw, reduser has a real name policy.

ah, good to know :) yeah, scarlet will be amazing for the price, but alas, no one knows when it will be available. My best guess (which holds zero weight btw) is that it will indeed come out in the fall, but there will be a waiting list. Not as bad as the wait for the RED ONE, but a wait none the less. So for non RED ONE owners (who get first dibs) I would think you'd be able to get your hands on your own Scarlet in March/April 2010.

In the mean time, rent RED ONEs, or HVX or EX3 or whatever else the kids are shooting on these days :) oh yeah, the canon 5D ;)

March/april 2010 sounds just good. I still have some time to practice on rent cameras. Maybe i'll make a list of "Things To Be Shot On Red" till then :D Thank you for all the info.

It is not the camera that makes good movies or stills!!! It's the man or the team behind the camera and there abilities and commitment of course

completely agree Gerald Menclik. Even if the team works "perfect" they still need a camera :D so i have to buy one, cuz i am "playing" the cinematographer's part :D. Rents around here are very high for equipment and i'd like my own camera so as far as i searched the market i'd like the Red Scarlet.
