  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some advice please - Heat & Body Temperature?

Hey folks

I've recently upgraded to Build 20. Previously was on Build 17 - my RED One always used to run quite hot, I've had it shut down due to overheating on a couple of occasions although I've learned to watch for the danger signs and be more proactive about it now.

It seems since going to Build 20 it's running even hotter? By running hot, I mean within about 10-15 minutes of being turned on I'm getting alarmed about the heat of the body, particularly the top of the red one which feels like car panels out in the sun on a hot day - not so hot I couldn't touch it, but it does seem awfully damn hot considering it's done minimal work. This of course escalates when you start shooting w/out the Fan on for any period of time.

I haven't had the benefit of using other RED One cameras so I guess ever since owning it I've been wondering whether it's actually normal for these to get so hot so quickly. I'd really appreciate some feedback, especially from other Build 20 users - say you're working in a room that 30 degrees Celsius (about 86 degrees Farenheit), is it normal for the top of the body to get significantly hot within 15 minutes of being on? The fan seem to be operating properly etc.. the bottom of the camera isn't as hot as the top ... and I'm not getting immediate overheat warnings ... I just get the impression from reading other threads that people are able to power these on and run them for an hour or two without heat concerns, which makes me wonder whether mine has some kind of issue...

Anyhow, all feedback / advice appreciated.. thanks!

Yes, the camera gets quite hot easily. In my experience, as long as you can put your hand on the top of the body for more than 5 seconds there is not problem yet. If it is less then 2 seconds then it is better to help to camera cool down.

Lack of airflow in hot weather, for instance in a room, makes the camera heat up fast. Best solution I still find is to simply put a fan on it in between takes - nice for the crew as well.
