I don't get all the fuss about noise in the Scarlet. From what I see here, it's simply not true. These are night shots. The footage looks phenomenal. Can you please share some technical specs. Lense, ISO, speed, software, denoise?

Were the cops pointing at you?

Yep, They did not like that we were shooting them closing down the park but we just thought it was too awesome of a shot not to get... We were not even part of the protests, we just stumbled upon it on our way to wall street to get some footage from the financial district. The one cop took the camera and tripod and threw it, luckily my friend caught it and when I said "be careful that camera cost $25,000" he said " well get it out of here or I'll break it"

The subway shot and Times Square were shot on a Canon 17-40 "L" at F4, 1200 ISO.
Traffic was shot with a Canon 35mm 1.4 "L" at between 1.4 and 2.8
The occupy wall street stuff was all on the 35 1.4 and 50mm 1.2 wide open.

i like the shot at 2:43 a lot

Just reading that I felt my stomach drop. Good catch on your friends behalf.

fantastic footage, great low light performance, great imagery, makes me miss NYC. i worked in times square back in 1998. looks the same!

hey louis, thanks for posting this! May I ask what exposure settings you used at 36 seconds in. It always blows my mind to see deep focus shots at night that are perfectly exposed without noise, I figured I'd finally ask. Also, is what we're seeing pretty close to what you shot? What were your grade settings.. in a nutshell. Again, wildly fascinated and thank you.

Well believe it or not the shot at 36 seconds was shot at 17mm at F/4 on a Canon 17-40. I shot it at ISO 800 but ended up just adjusting ISO and white balance a little bit i RCX. The HDRx version of that shot is a a little better but I didn't get around to exporting it yet.

Btw, no noise reduction was done on any of these shots, the grading was minimal, Adjusting ISO and White balance a little bit here and there was done, and occasionally we messed with the curve to crush the blacks a little bit.

the f4 helps hold the signs quite well without HDRx, I remember shooting in times sq a few months ago with R1-MX at f2 and having trouble holding the signs without stopping down, only problem is at f2 or even f4 seems like you can get shots of bright signs but if you start getting shots that are more about people in times sq, you'll start having trouble getting a nice looking exposure without quite a bit of noise or without far blown out signs in the background.

I imagine it may not be an issue in times sq if all the signs are constant LED sources, but anyone know if its possible to run into trouble using HDRx where the short shutter (X) frame may have flicker from some light sources while the long shutter (A) frame would have no flicker? Just thought of this while thinking about this thread.

In my experience there was not a flicker on the X track. I will try to get that track up later. I'm not around to do it now but I'll do a quick blend of it and put it up on youtube.

Your shots look fantastic! Care to share your workflow? I haven't got the chance to do much night shooting yet but I need to head out and mess around. I feel as though my scarlet produces much more noise..

The footage looks great, thanks for posting. I'm one of those who is having a terrible problem with noise. I could never have gotten these shots with my Scarlet without the noise goalpost being pegged to the top and without noise everywhere in the darker parts of each frame.

I can imagine what the histogram looked like for some of those shots, but in the darker shots, like the cops at 1:46, where was the noise goalpost?

Thanks.

Wow man you are messin with NYPD!!! HA ha - that's pretty extreme - it is a huge chance to get hammered by them.
And I'd rather say "be careful - my lawyer cost $5K per hour" :)))
Nice shot by the way. Just take care. Use a telephoto lens from safe distance :)
