Solarization in EVF

I encountered this problem which could not be resolved by rebooting, reconnecting the VF nor checking relevant menu options. In the VF a green en magenta-ish solarization effect occurs. It is the most obvious in parts of the screen that are out of focus. Transitions in color become graphic en pixelgrain appears.

This effect doesn't show in footage en looks normal previewed on an SDI monitor. But it makes judging focus difficult in the VF so I'd like to solve it. Has any one experienced this issue before? Could this simply be a bad VF-cable (I didn't receive a spare in rental so I couldn't check)?

Cheers

How cold is it.

The EVF doesn't like the cold, and solariztion happens when the evf gets to cold. Quik solution is before you go out to shoot, put the evf by the heater in your hoese so the unit become nice and warm.

That figures, it was near freezing and very windy...

I'll try to keep it warm tomorrow! Thank you for the advice.

First put it by your room heater and then get a regular glove and wrapped the EVF with it and stick warm pack between the glove and evf yo should be fine. The trick is to start with the EVF really warm from the inside out.

Christian,

We had the exact same issue. Travis at Red was able to track down the problem. Apparently (If I understood him correctly) There is a board inside the EVF that was not receiving firmware updates. That board needed to be replaced. Our EVF is on its way back to us at this time.

Give Travis a call and tell him you have the same issue with your EVF as Aurora Coast Productions did. It should be fresh in his mind.

Good Luck,
G

Our EVF's just came back from this upgrade.
I have only tested one of them.
At -4°C (25°F) the solarization was still there, maybe less, but still present.
I think we have to get some kind of heater system.
Scandinavia can be very cold.

Have had this problem a number of times, but overall, infrequently. Not a temperature issue for me. In my instances the issue's been solved by unplugging the cable from the camera body end and reconnecting.

Yep, it happens in the cold.

Yep, it happens in the cold.

I've been shooting using EVF for backcountry skiing the past few weeks - in very cold windy conditions above treeline. The body and gear is rock solid in these condition, but the EVF posterizes more and more the colder it gets. I've had the full rig covered with snow, in pretty nasty conditions and it jsut keeps tickin. But...the EVF.

I just live with it - I can still work with it, but its obviously not ideal. My EVF is a September/October 08 delivered model FWIW

Thank you all for the advice.

Today I stuck a zippo fueled handwarmer to the VF when solarization came back and it helped te problem! Maybe the eyepiece heaters used on filmcameras deserve a second life keeping reds VF warm :sarcasm:

Cheers

Cold may be an issue with this problem,
however,
I live in Hawaii and I have been getting this problem when the camera is on for long periods of time... the longer the worse it gets. I thought it was just mine. Temperatures ranging from 72-95 degrees f.
I'll try the unplugging and re-plugging... that also worked to get rid of the little green specks (very x-files!) in another EVF I was working with recently.

RED EVF issue

RED EVF issue

Hello,
at first appologise for my bad english ... i'm french ;-)

I have an issue with the EVF we rent the RED one and it's comming back with EVF image red dirty solarisation. ( i sent an attached pict )
Is it the same for you ?

the problem is that i tried to plug it on another red body and the picture provided was ok excepted that the EVF cycles to swithc up & down ...

Send back the camera body & the EVF will cost me a lot of money, i'm sure that we will have to pay custom taxes again ...
