  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SoftPanels LED Lights with Intelligent/Precise Color Control

I went ahead and ordered two of the 1x2s. My interview lighting kit consists of:

1. Arri S30-C SkyPanel - Key light
2. Arri L5-C - Fill light
3. Fiilex 360 - hair light
4. Arri L7-C w/ softbox. - back light - Was my original key light until I received the S30-C. It was too dim with the softbox on for what I wanted. Its also big compared to the L5 and S30. I may sell this one now, if anyone needs one. Its the first gen. Was going to upgrade to gen 2, for the increased light output, until I saw the S30-C.

Now I will see if the key and fill are replaced by these. I Picked up the SkyPanel in January and really like it. The barn doors just shipped today from B&H. They were ordered back in January too.

Any idea if there will be barn doors for the SoftPanels? Can you see yourself using either the skin enhance or the auto?

I'm pretty sure there will be barn doors. Kevin said there are a lot of accessories planned and that they were currently in design phase. I would assume they wont be far behind the shipping panels. Accessories are easier to make than high precision LED panels.

Hi All,

great comparison Matt.

If you like, we are happy to provide you with an UltraColor Z400S Soft panel to do a larger comparison.

The best overview at the moment about our Soft series is available on http://www.ultrasoftlight.com also including the TLCI measurements and charts for daylight and tungsten. The meaningfulness of CRI as a measurement for color reproduction for the whole spectrum is really very limited and eventhough there is no perfect measurement, TLCI is already a more useful reference. From the many 0s next the the color chart in the ‘advice to colourists' (which shows the magnitude and direction of the corrections needed for lightness, chroma and hue) you can see that the color of the Z400S Soft and Z800S Soft is very close to perfect, which is also reflected by the TLCI value of 99 at pure tungsten and 98 at pure daylight.

Another nice property of the F&V Soft series is the linear brightness through the color temperatures. Unlike most other Bi-color lights the brightness does not have a peak at the middle between daylight and tungsten and is less bright at the "pure" color temperatures, but the fixture is actually brightest at pure daylight and the change is then linear throughout the adjustment range towards pure tungsten, which is slightly lower than pure daylight (1841 lux@1m at 5600K, 1599 lux@1m at 3200K).

The brightness from the diffused panel itself is already quite significant, but with the increased beam angle of the Soft series (130° instead of 60° of our previous panels) you have the option to re-focus the fixtures with the F&V Softbox & Intensifier to around 50°, which increases the brightness to 4400 lux@1m at 5600K, yet maintaining its soft light quality. All passively cooled in a compact and lightweight metal housing.

I'm happy to answer any questions.

Best,
Mark

Excellent write-up Matt, I just ordered a 1x2! Portability is not paramount to me so this light should make me pretty happy.

Mark-André I really like the optional intensifier. I usually don't need a wide beam angle and more punch is always welcome.
